★ ★ ★ ★ ★ They were hard workers back then. Just the achievement of extraction and then transporting down from the Plateau is mind blowing.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ One of the greatest defeats in engineering. Amazing history and the location was beyond my expectations. Heard abut this place when I was young, and said "one day I am going to visit The Denniston, and I DID!!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ An amazing experience. It's like once they finished work in 1967 and tore down the buildings and the rails that everything else was left as is.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A glimpse back into not only New Zealands mining history but also shows what hard work and tenacity combined with common sense and intelligence can achieve.
You stand on the staging platform and look at what the pioneers built and wonder why we now import coal from Indonesia.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Had no idea what to expect when we visited Denniston so what we found exceeded expectations. Lots of information and things to see regarding coalmining on the early 1900s. The views were truly amazing. Take warm clothing though...just in case.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This place is so much fun!! The great thing is, it's all a self-tour set up, so you could take 20 min or 3 hours (like we did). They have the main area of Denniston that has derailed signs at the entrance of all the mining activity, then you can walk around that area and read more really detailed and interesting signs. They have anecdotes from the era as well as statistics and history etc. In addition, there is just a really good view of the valley and west coast. Picnic tables and flushing toilets up there. If you're really keen, you can jump back in the car and drive to the settlements further on (Coal Brookdale, Burnett's Face). They have lovely walks that follow a creek where the miners would walk to and from work. You can see the openings of the mines (they are blocked off of course, you can't get in). I recommend bringing a torch to shine in if you ant to check it out.
Super fun!! Highly recommend.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Amazing free place to learn about historical coal mining and the long gone town of denniston. The whole place is so interesting to explore. Great information signs and exhibits. The loop walk is worth doing and doesn't take long, but give yourself an hour or two to fully explore the site. There's a cool video you can also watch online about the incline, the qr code link to the video is at the viewpoint to the incline. I loved my visit here and recommend it to anyone. You also get an amazing view as it is on a mountain. Be careful driving up as there are a lot of bends and the road is narrow and steep. Well worth the trip!
