Amazing facilities, the river is really lovely and the walks near by are easy and beautiful. We even had wild horses wander into camp.

Hidden gem, such an awesome camp! So many great walks to do nearby and mountain biking, hunting, fishing and the river is great for cooling down.

I just want to point out that Google Maps directions is not very helpful to get to this camp. It has an end point and dotted line to the camp. You have to continue up the road to Minginui , turn right at the fork just before the village , then right again at the T junction. Cross the river and take the first turn to the right . Keep on down the road to the camp located on the right (signposted) . The section from Minginui is good dirt road

Just home from a 3 night stay at whirinaki rec camp. Family of 6, 2x adults, 2x 11 year olds, a 4 year old and a 1 year old. Our cabin was great. Mattresses and a wood fire plus candles were in cabin on arrival. Big seperste cooking shelter with fire pit was awesome, made all our food there. Showers and toilets. Best of all were the amazing forest walks. We did waiatiu falls walk (1.5 hrs easy with kids) and rec camp river walk (20 mins super easy ) on day 1, sanctuary walk (1.5 hours easy with kids) on day two plus the wiremu merito track across the road from rec camp (30 min and once again really easy with kids). Our last walk on day 3 was the h tree track which was 45 min track that you could push a pram around if u wanted. Amazing bird life and forest. These walks were amazing. Sanctuary track walk blew my mind it was so stunning. We uses a ssc ( baby carrier) on all walks when 1 year old got tired. Its quite cold in forest so take a water proof layer.

Amazing place to get back to simple living. We took all our own cooking equipment but you can light wood fires to cook on. There is flushing toilets and hot showers. Marshall Heater for cold winters and fire places in the winter 8n the cabins. No phone reception so it's an awesome spot to just get away from the busy aspects of life. Awesome bush walks and great trout fishing as well as hunting
