Dr Sylvia Rosevear - Remuera
The time has come to announce that I am retiring from Private Practice as of the 29th July 2022.
Owing to changing expectations with practitioners in private practice, there is no one specifically taking over my practice. I am sure that your General Practitioner will be able to suggest a suitable replacement.
Importantly, if you are a patient currently on our Cervical Smear Recall list for your annual, 2 or 3 yearly smears, please make contact with your General Practitioner to ensure that you continue with your women's health checks at the appropriate times.
It was a privilege to see such a variety of patients over the years - I would like to thank you and wish you well for the future.
Yours sincerely,
DR SYLVIA K ROSEVEAR

β β β β β After a bad experience with Sylvia I mentioned this to my GP who was immediately horrified and asked if it was anyone in her medical centre that referred me (it wasn't). Turns out they get so many complaints about Sylvia they have a clinic wide policy of never referring any of their patients to her.

β β β β β My wife booked an appointment for consultation and Dr Sylvia was not just a wonderful doctor but a great listener. She took time to listen to us and gave a good advice. She was so comforting and her more 30 years of experience makes it a wonderful experience. I'll definitely recommend for ladies looking for a good private gynecologist. She is fairly busy throughout the year so appointments are recommended.

β β β β β "Do you want something to be wrong with your baby?"
If you are considering Sylvia as your OB, my advice is - just don't.
I wouldn't usually write a review, but, I feel I need to share this in the hope that no expecting mother will be subject to the way I was treated.
As a first time mother you have many questions around a safe pregnancy and the desire to deliver a healthy baby. Hence why you may opt to go privately and engage with an obstetrician. Every single question I asked of Sylvia, was rudely dismissed. Each appointment felt as if Sylvia had somewhere else to be and we were being rushed through. We timed our appointments and they were approximately 6-8minutes long. It is also worth noting, Sylvia does not have an ultrasound at her practice, so if you are expecting to get any information/reassurance about your baby's wellbeing at each visit, then Sylvia is not the obstetrician for you.
Below are just some of the many negligent and rude responses that I was subject to...
When I asked how frequently my baby should be kicking the one line response was: "He kicks when he wants to".
When I asked about recommended sleeping postures the response was: "You sleep, how you sleep"
When I asked where the placenta was sitting.. the response was: "why do you care ?".
Aside from the complete lack of emotional intelligence and genuine care, negligence also played a part in our decision to change OB's, I was severely anemic and this was not picked up until the third trimester. If this was caught earlier, the iron infusion I received may not have been necessary.
After further questions, as a curious and excited first time mother the short response from Sylvia was: "Do you want something to be wrong with your baby?". I left the practice in tears and realised that there is no way I would want this woman near me whilst I delivered my baby. Despite the fact we had already paid 60% of the fee, we made the best decision yet and immediately transferred to a new obstetrician.
After my awful experience with Sylvia, I spoke with other mothers and sadly they had similar if not worse experiences. I hate to think what would have happened had Sylvia been in the delivery suite with us. I only wish I had reached out prior to engaging with Sylvia.
If you have tried booking with AOC, Birthright & Origins, then my suggestion would be to opt for shared care (midwife / OB combo). Anyone BUT Sylvia.
My wish is that excited expecting mothers, who may consider Sylvia as their chosen LMC/OB, get the care they deserve.
Pregnancy is a special, sacred journey and no expecting mother deserves to be bullied by their OB.

β β β β β Highly competent, personable and practical
We always looked forward to our check ups with Dr Rosevear and over the course of the pregnancy, built a great relationship with her.
We had our fair share of questions throughout our 5/6 months with her and she was always very reassuring and backed her opinions/feedback/answers with the latest research - you can trust she knows her stuff. Moreover, we always felt any final decisions on procedures would be ours - she invited the discussion and we are so thankful for that.
Needless to say, we trusted her completely and our baby Olivia arrived (via natural birth) at the end of July 2021. Some decisive action had to be taken during the delivery but my recovery was quick and weβd do it all over again with Dr Rosevear.
Thank you Dr Rosevear - for being there for us all the way and bringing a very healthy and happy Olivia into the world. She lights up ours and we couldnβt have done it without you.

I was so lucky to have them for my first baby, it was an excellent experience. After delivery the stitch was healing well. I'm very satisfied with the result. thanks to them, baby and me are doing very well.

β β β β β Sylvia delivered my first baby boy 25 years ago and then 2 years ago (when I was a much older Mum to be) delivered my little girl and just 9 weeks ago my baby boy. I put my trust in Sylvia and she has been amazing. I recommended Sylvia to many others 25 years ago and have continued to do so. She is simply the best

β β β β β I was in labour for 6 hours and the entire time Dr Rosevear was grumpy, inconvenienced, and sullen about the fact that she had to be there late at night. When she first saw me she said she predicted the baby will be born in an hour. When it took longer she complained that I was "taking too long" and that "this isn't normal." She pushed me to be induced and when I hesitated she was annoyed and said "It's already not a natural birth because you had an epidural." I asked her what was the medical reason for an induction and she only repeated that it had to be done quickly. She argued until I reluctantly agreed - it's difficult to debate with a doctor when you're in labour. But each time she was visibly irritated that the induction didn't speed things up as much. At one point she sighed and said "well I might as well go and work on my shopping list" before exiting the room in a huff. Another time she glared at me mid contraction and said "I really should have been home hours ago. You're taking way too long."
About 4 hours into the labour she threatened to do a c-section if I wasn't ready to push the next time she came to check on me. My husband asked why was a c-section medically necessary and she only said it was because things were taking too long. It was clear there was no medical reason for a c-section, she just wanted to go home because it was late evening and she was impatient. (I asked another doctor to review later who confirmed it was a totally normal delivery where a c-section would not have been justified.)
By the time my baby was born Dr Rosevear was incredibly angry, yelling at the midwives to work quicker. When my husband was cutting the umbilical cord Dr Rosevear snapped at him "just CUT IT!!!" because he wasn't fast enough. The entire labour I felt rushed and scared because Dr Rosevear kept repeating how it was taking too long when in reality that was just normal! At one point my husband even considered telling Dr Rosevear to just go home because I was so upset and in tears.
During my hospital stay several midwives came over to tell me I wasn't the first patient to complain about Dr Rosevear, that she had a reputation for not treating women very well. One even said, "I don't know why Sylvia doesn't just retire - it's obvious she hates her job." My GP also confirmed they reported similar issues with Dr Rosevear.
Interestingly I have a friend who had Dr Rosevear delivery her baby who arrived midday during the week, and said she wasn't so rude and rushing as she was with me. Maybe Dr Rosevear is okay with mothers who give birth during business hours but gets annoyed and inconvenienced with those who disturb her outside of 9-5?
I also add that I was under maternal mental health care during my pregnancy due to a traumatic birth of my older child; which Dr Rosevear knew about. So I was shocked that she was so rude and unprofessional during my labour. She turned what should have been a special, memorable experience into a nightmare. It has been years since I had the misfortune of having her as my obstetrician and I still feel upset. Giving birth alone on the side of the road would have been a better experience than wasting so much money to have a doctor who spent most of her time with me snapping at me and telling me to hurry up so she could go home.
