The Durie Hill Elevator is good, cheap fun. For $2 each adult, one way, it's a neat wee experience. I would suggest taking the Elevator up, rather than down as the walkway can be a hot walk. The entrance is just across the Whanganui bridge, so don't let's Google maps fool you!

Sadly out of action for repairs when we visited but the view from the top of the building is spectacular . The spiral staircase is a little unnerving but well worth the trip to the top.

Great inexpensive fun. Tunnel is like something in a early James Bond movie. The echos are spooky. Elevator is a unique and the operator was fantastic showing good knowledge and enthusiasm. Recommend.

A hitherto unknown gem in Whanganui, this is the only public elevator built inside a hill in the world. 24 or so stories down to the bottom. Then there's the 200m+ long tunnel that leads to the rivers edge. Opened for the first time in 1919, both the elevator and tunnel are beautifully preserved and maintained. It's well worth a look!
