About Elephant Hill

Established in 2003, Elephant Hill is located within a stone’s throw of the Pacific Ocean on the idyllic Te Awanga coast of Hawke’s Bay on New Zealand’s North Island.

The winemaking at Elephant Hill is driven by tradition while not losing sight of what innovation can bring to the blend. Our aim is to make wines that are balanced and elegant and a true expression of the vineyards they come from.

The technology associated with winemaking is always improving, as is the knowledge and understanding of the science of wine. Important as these factors are, to preserve the varietal integrity of the fruit from our vineyard is key. In the winery we ferment our grapes in many small, separate batches. This allows for the nuances and character of each separate fermentation to come to the fore and be considered when blending for our Estate, Reserve or Icon wines.

The perfect vintage is warm and dry throughout autumn; the climate so benign of threats that we can pick the fruit when it is truly flavour-ripe for the style of wine desired. The perfect vintage, of course, does not exist. In crafting wine one learns to deal with the weather nature hands you, and gradually to enjoy the variation from year to year. Great wine should reflect the site and the climate of where it is grown. One of the most rewarding challenges in making wine is to craft a wine that best represents the vintage in which it was grown, that plays to the strengths of the harvest and mitigates the challenges that were faced.

Delicious wines, fantastic service. We did a wine tasting today and the guy (whoops, didn’t catch his name) was super knowledgeable and shared lots of insight about the vineyards, the style of wines and stories about the vineyard. Disappointing that the kitchen was closed (β€œnot a platter, not a cheese, not even a nut” lol) but the team were great about setting expectations, and the environment was really pleasant. Come here!

Didn't get around to booking our tasting but was told to walk in around 11-11.30am when we rung. So pleased we were able to get seated! Large palm trees lined the driveway up to the modern grand designed cellar door and restaurant. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable, enjoyed the tasting with a beautiful platter. They even have platters for kids which our little ones devoured. A wonderful experience and great way to end our Hawkes Bay summer holiday :)

Sisters hen weekend, lunch and wine tasting. Wine tasting was great fun. Was good to taste 4 different wines. Tom was full of useful information and dare I say it easy on the eye. Lunch was tasty. Description would of been useful on menu but we could of ask the wait staff. Overall was a great experience.

Elephant Hill Winery greeted us with the message, no tastings today. Slightly disappointed we went into the winery anyway. And there it was, the thing which makes businesses great, not just good. I am talking about highly skilled and dedicated staff. The cellar door staff (winemaker by trade) greeted us friendly and suggested to have an early lunch, which he will support with a great wine selection, "and by the way, which wines did you wanted to taste?" So we got an amazing lunch platter with nice wines and lots to taste. We were happy to pay premium, as the wine was awesome, the atmosphere on the deck was great and the cellar door was a wealth of knowledge.

Best experience I’ve had at a winery! The wine and views were just impeccable. But the staff was also such a highlight! Alan and Seb really know about the wine they’re serving but are also just top notch people who gave us the best experience! Thanks to all at Elephant Hill for the best time!

We thought Elephant Hill is just famous for its view and posts by instagram celebrities, but we were wrong. The whole wine tasting experience was enjoyable. The staff was professional and knowledgeable. We love all their Chardonnay that are so characteristic, complex and layers of notes. The red was nice too but not our favourite. The view was beautiful too. Book ahead. Highly recommended.
