About Four Square Waverley

Why the name Four Square?

The name Four Square emerged when Mr Barker, while talking on the telephone to one of the buying group members on 4th July 1924, drew a square around the 4 of the date on his calendar. He immediately realised he had a suitable name for the buying group, stating that "they would stand 'Four Square' to all the winds that blew".

By the end of 1924, products were appearing under the Four Square name, and by 1929, discussions were underway on the use of a common branding on stores. Early versions of the Four Square sign were produced in the form of red and gold hand painted glass panels for display in members' stores.

In February 1948, New Zealand's first self-service grocery store was opened in Onehunga by Phil Barker (the son of the founder of the group) and Ray McGregor. This soon became the norm for grocery retailing.

Stopped in as I was passing. Brought myself a lotto ticket. Place was busy plenty of locals there buying supplies. As I was only buying a lotto ticket lady in front of me insisted that I get served first. Awesome looking shop appears to have everything that one could require goucery wise.

We went in to buy something for lunch, I had a yummy cheese and ham sandwich, my husband chose a pie and we bought some blueberry muffins all to eat later at the beach. Helpful friendly service and plenty of variety. The food was fresh and very good.

This place is the locals general store. Staff are always helpful, they have groceries, a bakery, a tuck shop with all sorts of options including coffee, chicken and chips, not forgetting Anderson's pies. There is wine and beer available, lotto, and they have a post shop. Prices are reasonable. Well worth a visit, stop for an ice cream, lollies, or a cake. ?

This is a fab 4 square has its own bakery and we always stop for a snack or a drink or a lotto ticket on the way through. The end of day Irvines pies are not a true reflection of this store, avoid them lol you aren't that hungry. My bad. Should've got the pasties. Winters coming and the store was a little too cold today that's the only reason I gave it the 4 star rating and not the 5 today.
