★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Certified self containment area Only. A pity the public toilets are not up to scratch, for day trippers and that the coast road is closed. Come on council, fix it please.
UPDATE Feb 2022. New toilets & Shelters (wish we were still "on the road"

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Plenty of space but quite a bit not too level. Good walk around the point or great just watching the surf roll in. Adequate toilet and rubbish bins.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I had heard good things about this freedom camping site from several sources and they ware right. Quiet, sheltered, scenic and safe feeling I spent a happy 2 nights exploring the area and basking in some unexpected Southland early summer sunshine. The ground was rather muddy and cut up in some places but with a SC camper I had plenty of choice and found a lovely sheltered and dry spot to tuck myself into beside the boat ramp. Who doesn't enjoy the sound of waves washing onto the shore to lull them to sleep and gull cries to wake them in the morning? Riverton, with its fantastic museum that covers all aspects of local history as well as Rakiura/Stewart Island, is in one direction and quaint little Cosy Nook in the other. There is a short bush walk up to a great lookout at Round Hill. You might even be able to 'rescue' a footsore Te Araroa tramper and swap some fresh fruit for a few trail stories while saving them a few kms of road walking. Maybe I was lucky to get a week of sparkling weather, but the Southland coast is a stunning area and well worth taking time to explore.
