Each time I have dealt with Grieves it has been a great and warm experience. We bought our wedding rings from here and they couldn't have been more patient or professional with us, with lots of laughter thrown in to measure! I had a concerning interaction with a staff member in this jewellery store yesterday. I hesitate to rate this store with even one star in light of my experience. I purchased a replacement “swatch type” watch strap from Grieve Jeweller in September 2020 and was disappointed to find that the plastic strap had ripped in two places & the clasp had broken after nine months daily wear. The watch strap has been ordered for me by Grieve Jeweller from their catalogue & cost $49. I note that the original Swatch watch strap had lasted more than four years so I had an expectation of my replacement watch strap lasting more than nine months. I had presumed that Grieve Jeweller were selling me a watch strap they considered of reasonable quality. I took my watch & visa receipt into the store & was surprised that the staff member immediately told me that this was a ”cheap” watch strap so I could not expect it to last more than nine months “not like a $150 watch strap” she added. She went on to say that the broken clasp must have occurred because of being wrenched & that this watch strap must have had excessive wear and tear. She apparently consulted with a Jeweller upstairs and told me that they could take no responsibility for the watch strap and that the item being broken & unusable after nine months was reasonable. I was concerned and astounded by her comments that an apparently “cheap” item was not their responsibility and that lasting nine months was as good as it got from their point of view. The staff member’s comments implied that only customers who spend a larger amount of money could expect quality from their watch strap and she did not consider $49 for nine months wear to be excessive or unreasonable. Further her comments insinuating my use of the watch strap was the fault rather than any other explanation were customer blaming, unfounded & unnecessary. I had hoped Grieve Jeweller would take some responsibility for the quality of all products they sell irrespective of price; that they would seek to follow-up with their supplier of items that did not stand the quality test; that they would converse with each and every customer in a respectful way rather than judging the amount of money spent on an item or implying fault in the actions of the customer.

The folk at Grieve Diamond Jeweller are so friendly and helpful! Even though I couldn't afford an expensive item, they understood and helped me out tremendously with what I was looking for. They seem to have the best cost repairs and maintenance in Hastings, too. Highly recommend. J from Hastings
