Hillside Kitchen - Thorndon
Hillside is a tiny restaurant serving food and drinks that represent our region and country.
Our menus are written based on what’s in season, what we are growing in our garden or what we have foraged, for this reason, menus are not available to view in advance.
Our food is meatless/vegetarian/plant-focused or call it what you will, we just worry about making it delicious.
We select wines that do not use animal products in the winemaking process.
Our lunch and dinner menus are multi-course menus, we can cater for most dietary requirements with advance notice. Our weekend brunch menu is a build your own style menu.
We create this menu daily and do need to know about any dietary requirements in advance.
Menus
Lunch/Early Sitting (5pm to 5.30pm)
Available for early sittings and lunch only with 1.5 hours allocated dining time.
Menu includes: Snack, Bread, Appetiser, Entree, Main and Dessert and is $75 per person.
Dinner
Menu A - $87 pp - Snacks, Bread, Appetiser, Entree, Main, Cleanser, Dessert, Petit fours
Menu B - $98 pp - Snacks, Bread, Appetiser, Appetiser, Entree, Main, Cleanser, Cheese, Dessert, Petit fours
All bookings must be made via our online booking system with the exception of groups of 8 or over who need to email us, we only have 22 seats so larger tables take some organisation. We do not take bookings via phone and do not answer calls during service.
You will be asked to provide credit card details when booking to secure your table.
This is a guarantee and no amount will be deducted from your card with the holding deposit released on dining with us.
If you have a voucher you wish to use please follow these booking steps and you will then be able to redeem your voucher when you dine with us.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Hillside is our go-to place for special occasions, and never disappoints. The dishes on offer always surprise and delight. Creative, fresh, unusual, tasty. Things like celery sorbet and radish leaf pesto might look dodgy on paper but I can assure you that they are amazing and unforgettably wonderful.

They had great knowledge of what was on each plate and everything was spaced out well so we could fit all the food in. Will be recommending to friends and family. Thank you for a great date night.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great fun experience, is not about the quantity here, is all about the quality of the flavour and the excitement of waiting for the next dish as every dish is a surprise, you won't know what you get until it arrive at the table, we spend three hours on the dinner, but it doesn't feel that long at all because it give you time to slowly taste it, talk about it and enjoy the evening time, menu change according to the ingredients they have from them own farm, definitely will come back to try the next menu.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ What a beautiful dinner. We ended up staying there for several hours, and thoroughly enjoyed our time. The food was delicious and there were many flavours we hadn't tried before. Each dish was well-thought out and had special touches to it. The non-alcoholic and alcoholic matches worked well. The service was excellent, and well-explained. An unforgettable experience.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My husband and I had an absolutely phenomenal meal - I loved the use of seasonal fruit and veg in all sorts of unusual combinations. Will definitely be recommending it to friends and family who love a good vegetable-focused meal. My only qualm - and it's a small one at that - is that for a restaurant with such an emphasis on sourcing locally and with presumably a very sustainable ethos, I was surprised that they served bottled water rather than chilled tap water.
