New Zealand-based accountancy software firm Hnry yesterday expanded its operations significantly with its launch into Australia, cementing its trajectory from burgeoning start-up to established fintech in the A/NZ region.

Founded in 2017, the company deploys software aimed at helping freelancers, contractors and sole traders manage the financial admin that comes with working for oneself. 

The expansion across the Tasman comes after a six-month pilot programme resulting in ‘strong demand’ for their services from independent earners across Australia. 

Henry co-founder and CEO James Fuller explains that Hnry provides a single service to take care of all financial admin for self-employed workers by combining accountancy with an app.

“From invoicing and payments through to deductions and tax filings - combining a mobile app with an accounting service means that it’s all in one place,” says Fuller.

Fuller says that in Australia, as well as New Zealand, the self-employed market has grown considerably, due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Before COVID-19, an estimated five million Australians were earning some or all of their income outside of PAYG employment,” Fuller says.

“In the last six months, this number has increased, as more and more Australians look to different ways of earning during this period of uncertainty.”

Now, with a team of 18 full-time employees, Fuller says expansion across the Tasman was the natural next step - not least because of the inquiries and interest coming from the Australian market.

“One of the main reasons that we chose Australia as our first overseas market was due to the sheer number of Australians that got in contact with us and asked us when we were coming here,” he says.

“Prior to our six-month pilot, we spent six months getting set up for Australia, configuring tax rules, refining our platform and working with our Australian banking partner NAB to get the service ready. 

“We’ve had amazing feedback from early customers, who are really thrilled that the service has now arrived in Australia.”

When Hnry was first founded in New Zealand, it was just three people looking to solve their own problem, Fuller says.

“We were working as freelancers and contractors ourselves at the time, and we just wanted to focus on our clients and do great work, but suddenly we had to think about tax calculations and payments, or ‘reconciling’ in complex accounting software; we had to go and visit an accountant to ‘talk about our taxes’ - which mean a lot of stress and hassle,” says Fuller. 

“We knew when we started Hnry that this was a global problem - it’s something that freelancers, sole traders and contractors have had to put up with for years.”

I didn't believe there was a service like this in New Zealand. As a self employed contractor, Hnry literately solves all my tax problems and worries so easily. They have an amazing website and app (that is actually useable), their customer service support is the best (I can't fault the team at all), they do what they say they are going to do and more! Not to mention, they are an affordable pay as you earn service!

I love using Hnry. They make life as a sole-trader and freelancer super easy. I especially love the personal attention given towards the end of financial year regarding tax. The Hnry team is always helpful and incredibly fast to respond. They seriously take away a ton of admin from my shoulders.

Very easy to use app and queries responded to quickly. You don't always get paid the same day you get paid by your contracting agency. There can be a long delay so I recommend not setting up automatic payments to process out the same day you get paid. Friendly staff.

I've been using hnry for over a year. Incredibly easy to use, gets out of the way and pricing is very freelance friendly. Very accommodating for multiple income sources. Customer support has been great the very few times I've needed to contact about something.

Painfully slow to process invoices, every week it seems to take longer and longer, my client paid into my Hnry account 2 days ago and I'm still waiting, as its almost 5pm it now looks like I'll be waiting till tomorrow. Not ok, I have aps etc set to come out as this is my 'payday' and I'm not going to be able to pay them....can't buy my family dinner tonight. Yeah sure not having a tax bill at the end of the FY will be great, but this service is not ok, some of us small businesses owners live week to week, having to wait this long is ridiculous. Also, very hard to contact a 'real' person, mainly bots and automated answers, if you do manage to send a message to a real person it can take days to hear back.

First of all, I'd like to say that Hnry offers what,.in my experience, most accountants do not when you're business 'small fry' like me: very prompt, friendly and helpful accounting advice and guidance. But beyond the amazing customer service, the Hnry user interface is well laid out, easy and enjoyable to use, invoicing is a breeze, your GST and tax returns and payments are taken care of and the Hnry fee is very reasonable. I switched from Xero and an accountant to Hnry in May 2020 and have to say that over the course of 14 years in business, it's one of the best decisions I've made for myself and my business. Not only do I feel like a valued customer, but it saves me time and money.

Hnry has made starting out as a contractor a breeze - initial set-up was simple due to the extensive resources available, the prompt and proactive help from the knowledgeable team to assist, and the $1 demo. Would recommend to anyone in the contracting/self-employed world - takes all the stress away!
