About Jugnu's Little India

Wellington History

Jugnu Gill opened his first restaurant in 1997. Jugnu arrived in New Zealand from New Jersey, USA. In his working life he worked as a Systems Engineer in Information Technology for 2 large corporations. First in London and then in the USA. Jugnu has always had a passion for food and hospitality. He wanted to open a restaurant in New Jersey, but it was not practical at that time.

His siblings,  Dame Sukhinder Turner, Shammi Sandhu and brother Sukhmohan (Sukhi) Gill were already in Dunedin. Jugnu joined them in 1993.

It was a natural progression for Jugnu to help his brother with his business. Jugnu opened a restaurant in Queenstown with his siblings. and then owned and operated a Bar and Night club in Dunedin! A desire to branch out on his own eventually led him to Wellington.

Normally a regular at the little India in CBD, decided to come here as I was around, butter chicken is quite possibly the worst one Ive had in recent memory, tasted burnt, it was flavourless and really just bland. Not impressed at all as we spent CBD prices for something that didn't hold the standard. Very disappointing.

Had a lovely meal tonight at this hidden gem. The curry was excellent (they even had a vegan menu), the staff were friendly and the historic homestead location was really interesting. Not your average Indian restaurant, we will be back!

Lovely atmosphere, food was a bit of a let down for me unfortunately. Cant remember the name of our starters but was a prawn dish, very yummy! Mango chicken tasted like apricot chicken really. Naan bread was ok. The papadams, all I could taste was that burnt taste. Maybe I will stick with the butterchicken next time lol great customer service tho ?

Love the starters and curries. My favourite that I have to order every time is Paneer Pakora. If you are meat lovers, should try tandoori platter which comes with lamb and chicken. The best one I have ever tasted so far. They serve alcohol, cocktails etc. Limited parking space however.
