Kapiti Island Nature Tours - Paraparaumu Beach
About Kapiti Island Nature Tours
Our overnight tour package gives you 2 full days on the island. You'll spend your first day at Rangatira in the middle of the island, with the chance to climb Kapiti's highest peak, or explore the lower tracks through established New Zealand forest. We can arrange a packed lunch for you if requested in advance, otherwise you’ll need to bring a packed lunch and drink for your 1st day.
In the afternoon you'll be transported to Waiorua, where you'll spend the night at the lodge. You'll be treated to local beer and wine, and a delicious home cooked meal before heading out after dark on a guided Kiwi spotting walk.
Staying in a cosy cabin, you'll fall as?leep to the sound of calling Kiwi and Weka, Kaka and Ruru. A hot breakfast and fresh coffee will help you experience the world come alive as you watch the sunrise over Waiorua Bay, on one of the oldest sanctuaries in the world.
You'll spend your second day exploring the Waiorua tracks, with a coastal or hill walk available. After a hot lunch at the lodge, you'll depart Kapiti in the afternoon of day 2.
Please note: the coastal walk is generally closed between 1 October & 31 March due to nesting seabirds.
Leave us a note in the “Special Requirements” field if you’d like a different arrival or departure time - we can also offer an afternoon arrival, or morning departure.
All bedding and towels are provided. Please bring your bathroom necessities.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I had the most wonderful, peaceful stay on Kapiti Island. It was an amazing two days of hiking and exploring this beautiful island while enjoying amazing sights and bird wildlife. The hospitality at the lodge was beyond welcoming and I had a lovely evening. I stayed overnight in a lovely, rustic cabin. It was the perfect chance to get away from the city and spend the night in a relaxed, peaceful setting away from any technology or city noise. The food was delicious and served family style so I got the chance to get to know the lodge owner and the other guests. Thank you so much for an amazing two days! I highly recommend this tour to everyone!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Had such a beautiful day exploring Kāpiti island! Our tour guide Graham was friendly and had a wealth of knowledge about the plants, wild life and the Māori and European history of the island. The extra $20 for a guided tour is worth it, we really enjoyed learning about the elements that make Kāpiti island so special. You are immersed in bush with beautiful bird song creating a peaceful and serene environment for you to appreciate the beauty of Aotearoa. This is truly a worth whole experience and Kāpiti Island Nature Tours make the experience that much more lovely. Thank you!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ SERIOUSLY GOOD TIME WAS HAD
Check in at the mainland office Saturday morning with Minnie was smooth and quick, with the walk across to the beach only a couple of minutes.
Hopefully this will give you a vibe of the entire overnight stay experience.
OK so … did a last min booking because they had a cancellation.
Had perfect weather.
The entire trip was seamless from pick up off the beach, then dropped at the south end of the island to climb to the top lookout. (it is a pretty hefty climb but you are surrounded by amazing bush and birdsong every step of the way. Started with the guide (Kerry and Tiffany who were both really informative while also being chilled as… WIN) )
We really took our time to get to the top as we kept stopping to listen and watch the birdlife that were completely un afraid of us so just carried on behaving as they would so that felt REALLY special. The views form the top are huge but sea haze meant we couldn't see the S island that day, then back down to the boat to be transferred to the accomodation at the north end of the island. From here on the entire experience was seamless smooth and incredibly warm.
Manaaki who greets you on the beach and is the central point of contact is … one of the most impressive people I have meet in quite a while on a lot of levels.
He is furthering both the ecology of the island, Maori culture and a thriving business at that the same time.
Then transfer to the lodge.
Check in: Rose & Julia were on hand and made things easy.
We relaxed for an hour… Now, to THE FOOD…
Drinks provided were good local beers and wines, and some great cheeses,
Then DINNER
The chef, Kake prepared lemon caper warahou, 2 really delicious salads, mixed vegetables and then a desert. (vegetarian and gluten free options were in hand and were apparently very very good as well)
The breakfast was cereals, eggs and fruit and yogurt. the fruits were delicious.
Lunch was also very very good range of salads a quiche and some chilli chicken (basically every single one of the other guests felt the food was 'great'!
I’m sure hunger after a big hike helps a bit, but all in all the food here is really great.
We did a sadly unsuccessful kiwi hunt the first night, but the staff member (again my memory is bad and I've sadly forgotten her name either Bianca & Kiri ) did a great job trying, so hats off!
Second day
Breakfast as mentioned, then walked up to the top of the north islands lookout (less hard climb, but still works up a sweat.
Great views and some nice bird action but not as densely populated as the south half of the island, then back for a delicious lunch (as mentioned)
We spent the last hours just enjoying the location, and feeling somewhat exhausted from the trekking but very very happy with the experience.
Thanks also to the Boat skipper: Mark on Saturday, Markham on Sunday and the Crew: Maru & Ethan
If you can … GO!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Absolutely amazing experience. Great hosts full of enthusiasm and knowledge. We stayed in a glamping tent with an amazing view and could hear the kiwi call (amongst others) all night. The bird life is truly amazing and well worth the visit. The overnight stay includes delicious meals and we went on the kiwi spotting tour which was wonderful, not only did we see a Kiwi but a Little Blue Penguin. We will definitely be back!!
