Possibly one of NZ's best kept secrets. Dinner, breakfast ( both pre Humpridge) and lunch on the track. Home grown veges and fruit and the tastiest apple ( and raspberry)crumble that beats my own old apple formula. Secret ingredients include 80 heritage apple trees. Gorgeous! Home made jams and preserves to take a taste of Southland home with us. Merci.

This is an ideal centre for exploring beautiful Te Waewae Bay even if you aren't tramping. I had intended freedom camping up the valley but as a solo camper van traveller didn't feel particularly safe in the first spot and the other along the coast was packed with campers. Not needing power, a few dollars for security, quiet and some pleasant company suited me well. The lodge facilities that I used were spotlessly clean and comfortable. Locating the main kitchen light switch was a bit of an issue ? but I didn't actually need it. I enjoyed a lovely after dinner walk through the reserve to the river. Nearby are endless superb beach walks and some cute little villages with history that's worth reading about. Tuatapere itself surprised me and worthwhile exploring. If I learnt nothing else during my travels through Southland, I know to wander slowly through, talk to locals and investigate beyond the Southern Scenic Route. Thanks Last Light Lodge for a relaxing pre-holiday season stay.

It will be noisy if it is full. The rooms and bathrooms are clean. It is a step up from a backpackers and just fine if this is your budget limit. I found the owners / operators unfriendly to me, but saw that there were some they engaged with. I wouldn't bother again, and would happily pay more for somewhere else.

The Last Light Lodge is an experience not to be missed--the food is absolutely delicious and an impressive example of organic agri-tourism--the majority of what you eat is grown on site! Not only is the food nutritious and delicious, but the market garden is epic! Be sure to take home some conserves too!

My favoured spot to stay in Tuatapere. Affordable clean rooms that retain their charm from the past as a forest service camp. Not noisy or scungy. Flash as meals from the kitchen. Finest venison I've tasted.

Stayed the night before heading to hike Humpridge. So pleased we made the call to take up the offer of dinner, packed lunches & buffet breakfast before hand at the onsite restaurant. Absolutely delicious with majority of food grown on site, so fresh & tasty. The rooms were warm, clean & tidy - double glazed so nice & quiet and will be very warm in cooler months. Shared bathroom facilities were lovely & clean. Most importantly - I will go as far as saying the long black was right up there with the best I have ever had (and I have had a lot of coffee) 100% will recommend to friends, family & acquaintances travelling through Tuatapere.

I didn’t have any high expectation as it was just a stay before getting onto Humpridge. It turned out surprisingly good stay experience. The room was clean and the restaurant was outstanding. Good coffee as well. I didn’t use shower facilities so I couldn’t say much but it looked clean too. I wish I knew this beforehand so I could stay one or more night there. Just a few minutes away from the local bush walk. Highly recommended.
