★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Excellent point to stop when traveling up or down the west coast. The warmth of the hosts is astonishing! (book with diner, there's nothing around for 45km)

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Maybe the best hosts I’ve ever had at any Lodge/B’n’B. Do book with the dinner, there’s nothing within an hour from the lodge. And do go for a walk in the afternoon with one of the hosts.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My party was meant to fly in for a Tahr hunt on a Saturday but the chopper was stormed in for two days, luckily, the owners of the lodge, Duncan and Wendy were also keen hunters, they understood our situation and generously hosted us for another two days.
As soon as the weather had cleared the lodge phone rang, Duncan ran down the stairs "Boys, the hunt is on!", lent us his rifle bags, drove us to the helipad in his Hilux, "Remember Tom, if it's brown Put it down" and we were off in the air to a great hunt. When we returned he entertained us at the Paringa Salmon farm until our shuttle to Queenstown had arrived.
Duncan is a top lad with many hilarious stories! Very Crumpian :D
Prior to meeting Duncan I thought the Mahitahi lodge was another stopover before the start of my great adventure but the adventure had already started when I shook his hand as we arrived at the lodge in a torrential thunderstorm.
The lodge is a one of a kind, apart from the windows and plumbing it is almost entirely built out of wood, not just any ordinary timber but Matai and Rimu, there's enough Matai timber to make any builder foam.
On the first night we were entertained with stories from Duncan's adventures with Wallace while dining on masterfully seasoned Pulled Pork served by Wendy.
On the second day we followed Duncan to a creek in his backyard and fed sausages to his giant long fin eels that were at least 50 years old and harvested Silverbeet from the garden for supper.
On the third day Duncan showed us his gold sleuthing machine and taught us how to pan for gold in his stream.
They didn't have to do any of that, the lodge itself was luxurious with unique architecture, letting us stay extra days due to bad weather was more than generous of them but Duncan and Wendy went out of their ways to make our adventure and gave us memories we will treasure,
Thank you for your hospitality and the adventures you made for us.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is the place to go for that wonderful get away holiday, amazing location and excellent accommodation , but the real bonus here is your hosts Wendy and Duncan, they are warm, welcoming, friendly and so knowledgeable about the areas history and activities. Thanks for a memorable stay. Vince , Kris and Phoebe.
