Towering 14-metres above the deep water of Lake Taupo, artist Matahi Brightwell's Ngatoroirangi Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings has become one of the North Island’s biggest tourist attractions.

About Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings

Wild and ancient, the river-run mountains of the Kaimanawa Forest Park have long called to adventurers and hunters. Wild horses, sika and red deer roam the park, and the mostly untouched native beech forests are alive with native birds (including kiwi), insects, the large indigenous snail Powelliphanta marchanti, and native bats.

Fantastic experience with several sculptures on the rocks. Better to see than explain it. I recommend it by reaching it with sail boat.

Beautiful place to visit. You will need a boat though. We went on The Kakariki Sail Barbary.

A very unique carving on the side of the rock cliff. Has a history story to tell. It's a monument that I feel needs to be experienced on cruise tours so you are able to learn of the history and significance. It is possible to visit this Maori Rock carving but only if you have your own boat to cruise out to see or feeling active and adventurous and want to kayak or jet ski out to its location. It takes approximately 10 minutes across the lake from the towns boat Harbour. Shorter if there's boat jetties, by Acacia Bay etc. A great tour company that does these live commentary tours to the Rock is Chris Jolly Outdoors. Or other tour companies include Ernest Kemp and Barbary Yacht Tours. Worth a look. It's a must-do activity to do when visiting Taupo.

The boat trip here was so beautiful and relaxing. We jumped off our boat near the carvings for a quick swim, just an overall impressive and beautiful piece of art. Gets very busy with kayaks and boats everywhere, but I guess that just happens!

Really great attraction that is popular around the lake! Best to take a boat tour there for the best view. Attraction has a lot of history with smaller carvings around.

Very cool place to visit. We took Barbary Eco Sail boat tour there. Was excellent and is highly recommended. I've also done the trip on a traditional boat, but the sail boat is the best for the ultimate experience!
