About Mission Estate Winery

Mission Estate is a multi-award-winning winery and an iconic New Zealand landmark located in the heart of Hawke’s Bay. Established in 1851 by French missionaries, it is New Zealand’s oldest winery and home to a heritage like no other.

Paul Mooney, our passionate winemaker since 1979, crafts a wide range of classic red and white varietals characterised by purity of flavour, finesse and delicacy. Trained by the Marist Brothers themselves, Paul imparts the very essence of Mission’s French heritage winemaking philosophy into both our Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough wines.

We consider ourselves guardians of our heritage and our land, and for more than 20 years we have been proud to be a founding member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand. In 1998, we were also one of the first wineries in New Zealand to be certified with the internationally recognised environmental management system ISO 14001. Both certifications represent Mission’s ongoing commitment and dedication to minimising our impact on the environment.

We were on a bike tour. We visited Church road first. Reception was amazing. Staff were super friendly. We had such a nice time. Mission was the complete opposite. Frosty reception from all staff we encountered. To top it off, we were not able to sit outside for a glass of wine. Apparently they were getting ready for dinner service. However the entire time we were there, they did no setup and even left the dirty plates on the tables. Avoid this place if you want a nice experience.

Such a beautiful winery, the main building and the gardens are stunning. Nice to have an informational sheet and the chance to explore a small museum as well as the wine tasting. Staff were courteous and friendly, checking in with me as my tasting was self-guided to see how I was finding it and if I needed anything. Souvenir glass was a nice touch too. A very enjoyable afternoon.

This was not a great experience. Certainly not a fine dinning experience although the cost was of a fine dinning experience. I have certainly had better at napier. For eg: craggy range or central fire station. I had the horseradish entree with steak and greens and chips. The chips were useless. Typical PAK’nSAVE chips. Overall taste and value was 2/5. The dessert was worth it though 4/5. Overall bill with 2 drinks was 132$. There are better places to visit.

We biked to mission estate and it was glorious! Beautiful trees and surroundings with all the vines and the famous mission estate house! We got the platter and it was delicious! Such a variety of food and so well put together! We then did the $15 wine tasting, which was a great experience the host was lovely. We also got a complimentary cup with the tasting. I have also been to Elton John at the winery which was another great experience. Would highly recommend people check it out!
