★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Really cool space and ambiance, service is friendly and attentive. Food is nice - their tiger prawns and pork belly skewers are great, decent for a westernised Japanese place. The price is a bit higher than what I would expect at a restaurant of this level - 2 skewers for $15 would not fly at a yakitori bar ?
That said, I'd recommend this place for the locals looking for a cool place to chill and have a nice Japanese meal as local options are rather limited.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We visited Mr Tanaka's on 18/03/2022 for my son's 14th birthday. The food was good, the atmosphere was great and the service from the waitstaff was excellent. A special thanks to Amanda who went above and beyond to accommodate our sons' allergies and keep them safe from harm : )

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great service! Food was good but not fantastic. I had high expectations given the ratings and being an avid fan of Japanese cuisine, I couldn’t wait. Good creativity and diverse menu, but quality not quite enough to get 5 stars IMO. Cheers for a good family dinner regardless!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This place has become our favourite restaurant in Ellerslie, they just seem to do everything right. The food is amazing and usually a modern twist on a Japanese classic (the karaage chicken is a must!). Great decor too, which is somewhat rare in NZ. Best part is for $50 you can shout the whole restaurant a shot of sake and bang on the big drum!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I went here a few weeks ago just before lock down with my partner and we had a really good time.
It was during lunch and they weren't too busy. We sat inside and I was able to sit on the cushioned bench. Normally I give my partner the good seat, but she insisted I take it so I was very grateful. It was a very chill spot.
We ordered a few things to share off the menu which included the sashimi platter, fried squid, tuna tataki, and a couple other items. I thought everything was prepared and seasoned well. The fish seemed very fresh to me too. I will say it is a bit pricey, but I think it was worth it.
Overall we really enjoyed ourselves and were grateful for the good time we shared there. Cheers Tanaka's team.

We have just moved into the area and thought we would celebrate with a meal out on night 1. Unfortunately, by the time we made it into the village, many restaurants were closing, even though they had advertised later closing times (it was also a Sunday evening around 7.45pm) but this place, notwithstanding being quiet, welcomed us in.
Our waitress was a chip off the old block. Very entertaining and helpful with the menu. We ordered drinks and food, which thankfully all came out quickly and was so delicious.
We are so pleased to have this place so close to us and will be back again. We highly recommend the beef tataki and teriyaki salmon.
