About Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave

The hot springs, geysers and clear blue pools at Orakei Korako discharge alkali chloride water. This water ascends quickly to the surface from deep reservoirs where the temperature is hotter than 175°C.

Upon discharge at the surface these waters cool. As they cool below 100°C, the silica that is carried in the water is deposited at the surface, forming the white silica sinter terraces. Sinter is rock that is formed over time by the deposition of silica from thermal water.

Faulting controls where the thermal water discharges by opening cracks in the rocks. Faulting not only provides open paths for the waters to flow through, but the fault movements have also produced the stepped terraces, which are covered in silica sinter.

On the western side (lake side) of the fault lines, the sinter sheets have been downthrown to create the stepped sinter terraces.

Silica has been depositing, forming sinter from the cooling alkali chloride waters at the surface, well before the 186 AD Taupo volcanic eruption which formed Lake Taupo. Follow the boardwalk to experience one of New Zealand's most impressive geothermal fields.

Great place visitor center was nice with view over the lake to the geothermal feld paying for the boat Ride over the lake was painless ,no waiting straight on board for the short trip. Cleat safety to instructions and signage, to remind you that this is a active geothermal feld. Also the water us hot! Board walks over the feld are generally low raise but there is some climbing up stairs , don't forget your water. We didn't see any big steamy eruption s if gizers but the were bubbling and boiling with the occasional bigger effect. I found somewhat hypnotic nice look outs over everything. The mud pools were not at there best although still entertaining there was some bird song in the bush we were enthralled by the antic's of a fantail that followed us go a while , once back to the landing the boat came straight over to pick us up. All in all well worth it

Definitely worth a visit if you are staying in Taupo or Rotorua as it's located between both cities. I visited the park a couple weeks ago when the temperature was a bit warmer. Bring plenty of water on a hot day! The board walk is 80% well-formed and maintained. However, I personally won't go there on a wet day or after a heavy rain. It will be pretty slippery and some part of the track (up toward the cave) can be muddy.

Fantastic experience! I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. There are silica terraces, hot springs, bubbling mud pools, and even a geothermal cave (viewed from a platform). There’s a convenient wooden boardwalk that covers three zones - which can be completed in 1 or 2 hours depending on your pace. The steps have wooden railings so that all ages can enjoy. There’s a short ferry ride across the lake which takes you to the site. This is included in the admission price. If you have the time, it’s definitely worth that going to see. Just remember to bring plenty of water and a hat!!! It can get pretty warm, particularly on a hot day!

We had a really fun day at this park with the kids. Lots of unique geothermal wonders to see and includes a boat ride over the river. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Wasn't cheap but price seemed about right considering the operating cost of a business like this. I have a feeling that this business will have really suffered from the lack of international tourism (it was very quite, mid summer). So please support if you can. On a hot day take lots of water as it is ridiculously hot with the heat coming from underneath added.

Really great and untouched place to visit! A little walk that isn't too difficult - whole thing can be done in less than a hour with pathways clearly marked out. Would recommend taking some water! You get a great view of everything and see some unique geo-thermal colours and bush.
