About Oriental Rongotai Footbal Club

Oriental – Rongotai Football Club is situated on the Miramar Peninsula only 7 kms east of the city centre and 1 km from Wellington International Airport.  Its home playing field is the Polo Ground on Park Rd, comprising of two floodlit fields, an indoor ‘polyturf’ gymnasium,  and social clubrooms. One of its more illustrious neighbours is film maker Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings & King Kong) and his film studios which are situated 400m away.

Established in 1888 as the Oriental Football Club and through amalgamations of smaller clubs over time, until in 1969 a final amalgamation with Rongotai Old Boys saw it become Oriental – Rongotai Football Club. (Rongotai – “sound of the sea”)

Ories, as it is affectionately known, has over a number of years formed a strong alliance with the local secondary school, Rongotai College. The club has supported the school by providing a large number of resources and coaching personnel and in return Rongotai has supplied recent sensations, All Blacks, Ma'a Nonu and Julian & Ardie Savea, New Zealand Sevens Representative Roy Kinikinilau. The importance of this alliance is best illustrated by the well performed Senior 1’s and Colts teams and the large number of Rongotai Old Boys playing in these teams. Testimony to this is 10 -12 old boys that take the field for the club's Premier team each Saturday.

The appointment of club stalwart Mason Malagamaali'i as the club's fulltime Rugby Development Officer has provided the club with excellent coaching resources and a high profile among the area's other local colleges, Scots, St Pats and Wellington East and St Catherines.

Ories has a strong 7-a-side culture and annually travels to overseas destinations to contest competitive tournaments. This has always provided 1 or 2 places to members of the Rongotai 1st XV.

Ories can claim World Cup winning Black Fern Rebecca Liua'ana, New Zealand Sevens Reps Tafai Ioasa and Justin Wilson Tongan Internationals Milton Ngauamo, John and Ma'afu Pale, NZ Maori Justin Wilson and Tongan Sevens Rep Thomas Russell.

Ories is very proud of the environment that it has created with its player and supporter base. Along with its forward thinking and motivated committee Ories will remain at the forefront of Wellington rugby clubs for years to come.
