Pirongia Heritage & Information Centre

Te Whare Taonga o Ngaa Rohe o Arekahanara

The Pirongia Heritage & Information Centre on State Highway 39 offers visitors information about Pirongia and its district. Advice is available about places to visit and things to do. We have a variety of brochures for local attractions along with DOC track booklets available.

A variety of displays in the Centre tell the story of the Pirongia settlement from its military beginnings to the present day. They include artefacts and stories of local families, institutions and the changing landscape. Particular attention is paid to Mount Pirongia, which dominates this landscape, as it was of great significance to the original Maori occupants of the area. Today it provides outstanding recreational opportunities including a variety of tramps and walks that cater for any fitness level.

Information may also be obtained from the centre about visiting a number of local historic sites including the East Redoubt and the Armed Constabulary Redoubt, described by the Historic Places Trust as the best preserved redoubt in the country, both of which are within easy walking distance.

Particular attention is paid to Mount Pirongia which dominates the landscape. The mountain was of great significance to the original Māori occupants of the area and today provides outstanding recreational opportunities.

In addition, the Centre is developing its own archives, and access to a growing fund of historical information, including that about families and institutions is available on request.

This is a lovely old converted church, beautifully restored. Plenty of displays about the history of the place and knowledgeable staff.

A little hidden gem in pirongia, with a visitors centre as well as historic centre. The centre is run by volunteers, that have awesome knowledge of the historic displays in the centre and are happy to direct you to the various redouts in the area and historic houses.

We discovered this visit to centre not too long ago whilst we were looking for things to do while I car charged at the electric vehicle fast charger at the foursquare. We were amazed to learn about the local area in this visitor centre, we have been coming to pirongia for years but learnt so much from a short trip to the historic visitor centre. The ladies working there with wonderful, friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back

Did you know that the visitor centre building has been moved twice? I didn't but now I do and so do you. Its surprisingly well stocked with local curiosities and there is even a little table for the kids to draw at. 10 second summary: Maori history, oldest racecourse in NZ, very old rugby club and mining.
