Amazing spot, especially on a hot day. So refreshing. A very popular swimming hole

The water holes are the rock formations that form along the Wairoa River. There is a carpark that leads to the river where you can swim and jump off the rocks into the deep water. You can also move further downstream where there are more places to swim and jump off. It is really deep (which is why you can jump from the rocks) so you need to be a decent swimmer. The rocks are also quite slippery so you need to be careful near the waters edge. We had floaties to just relax on the water as well as going down the falls. Really good place for those that like a bit of a thrill.

Great afternoon exploring this hidden gem. We climbed the big boulders and went up the river to the deeper pools. Epic!

Great place for swim! But should definitely check the dates before going in. There are days where they open up the dam.

Awesome spot with swimming options for a range of ages. Possibly a bit limited for preschoolers unless they're quite confident in the water. If you're keen you can jump off the cliffs, or if that is a bit extreme for your liking there is at least one rope swing over the river. We didn't explore too far as we had three young kids with us, but there seem to be plenty of attractions further downstream and/or over the other branch of the river, based on the number of people coming back from that direction. Use the link on the Poripori water holes website before you go to make sure it isn't a high river day due to them releasing flow from the dam upstream.

Great spot for a fresh water cool off! Very busy over summer.
