Narratives that tell of its origin. It is from these stories that the artist collective of Rākai Jade was formed, a group of passionate and focused carvers based in Rotorua. Our aim through research and design knowledge is to create Taonga that transcends generations.
New Zealand Nephrite pounamu is as rich in its unique quality and contrasts, as the traditional Māori narratives that tell of its origin. One such tradition tells of Poutini the ancestor, fleeing from the pursuit of Hinetuahoanga (the personification of Sandstone).

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My boyfriend and I booked ourselves into a full day jade carving session with Charlie. It was, without a shadow of a doubt, the best experience we had here in Nz (and we have been travelling around NZ for around 2 months already). Charlie was patient, super skilled and had so much knowledge about the stone and the different tools and techniques to achieve different effects. We spent all day there carving a price of jewellery for each other and I was amazed at the final peice. Neither of us had any carving experience prior to this and have both created something quite amazing. Best $150 ever spent. If you do anything in rotorua, make sure it's this. A truly unforgettable experience.
