β β β β β Rangihoua Heritage Park is the location of the famous Marsden Cross, the stone monument that commemorates the celebration of New Zealand's first Christmas. A 40-minute walk past interesting and innovative interpretation panels leads you to its location, on the shores of Oihi Bay and its lovely beach.
Rangihoua Heritage Park is Aotearoa New Zealandβs first planned European settlement, a place where MΔori and Europeans learned to live side by side. This Christian mission was established on Christmas Day in 1814 by Reverend Marsden and Chief Ruatara, who could both see the benefits of co-habitation for their people.
Many hundreds of people lived here, both MΔori and European. The two cultures lived peacefully together, and the people of Rangihoua PΔ were the protectors of the settlement in its early days.
The Marsden Cross memorial marks the place where New Zealandβs very first Christmas Day service was held, led by Reverend Marsden in 1814.
In 1832, the settlement moved to more fertile land at Te Puna, a few kilometres to the west.
At Rangihoua Heritage Park you can walk in the footsteps of important historical personalities and find out more about the history of this important place.

β β β β β Well worth a trip. Large car park and compost loos at the top. Interesting walk down to a deserted cove. All the signs on the way are really informative about the history of the first mission in New Zealand. Its quite a hot walk, not too much cover but there are a few covered seats on the way. Great view too.

β β β β β A stunning reserve to visit and take a stroll through to Marsden Cross. The walking track is well maintained and quite easy going, with only a few hills to begin with. The reserve also has a really peaceful section of bush, which adds lovely variety to the walk and some wildlife to spot!
I would highly recommend this to anyone up north :)

β β β β β Great spot to understand early European settlement in New Zealand. 1.5 km walk down to the beach and Marsden Cross, which is OK except you have to walk back up! No facilities at beach, long drop toilets at the entrance at the top. Take togs for a refreshing swim. Highly recommended, the views on the drive to get there are amazing. Be aware, gravel road for last 10kms or so.
