★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I approached this firm via a very polite email to enquire if they held my mother’s Will, providing as much relevant detail as possible.
The response was dismissive, advising that ‘lawyers should not be giving out such information to unsolicited emails’, because ‘I could be anyone’. Even though I advised I could provide CERTIFIED IDENTIFICATION, plus a CERTIFIED COPY OF THE DEATH CERTIFICATE.
I have no idea how their clients are allowed to engage them in the first place in that case, as a phone call the day before to this firm (during working hours) was left unanswered – and both of my methods of contact were ‘unsolicited’ approaches. It’s almost as if they don’t invite new clientele – I have analysed their (poorly planned) online presence, which is testimony to that.
Because I have a few years of (recent) deceased estate management experience with a law practice, I was stunned at this dour response. A family member contacting a law firm to try to locate a missing Will is not uncommon in my experience. And I was not asking about the contents, merely trying to find the location of the document.
I found this to be a very negative firm to deal with – I have made enquiries with other firms about this matter and have had professional, helpful and kind responses. Courtesy is not difficult.
