★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I was gifted a beautiful toki carved by Sands Carving Studio by my wife when we got married. I lost it shortly after in the ocean, I was so guttered. I contacted Sands Carving Studio and asked if they could carve a new one based on a picture I had of the one I lost. My wife and I were heading overseas shortly after I contacted Sands. What I received exceeded expectations, it was absolutely beautiful. The toki was completed and posted to me before we moved overseas for mahi. Thank you, having this taonga with me over in Singapore will anchor me back to Aotearoa and keep us safe.

Alex is my go to guy for anything taonga for almost 10years now and he never ever disappoints. I have had my pounamu created and later repaired after breaking it (twice haha). Alex helped me co design my partners unique pounamu which is nothing short of spectacular. And most recently on very short notice, he made dreams come true by crafting a beautiful engagement ring.
Thank you Alex for all the amazing work you have done for me thus far! I know there will be plenty more in years to come. I cant thank you enough ?

As a filmmaker and producer, I am always seeking artists to collaborate with and sharing their craft in creative ways. Meeting ALEX SANDS and his team was a highlight for my film work in New Zealand. They are artists through and through, and beyond that, great people whose vision I trust. We've had a great professional relationship.
The creativity, authenticity, and detail that goes into creating their heirloom artwork is matched by genuine personalities and care for the customer.
Capturing this on film was special for me and I knew I wanted to leave with Taonga to admire into the future, so I’ve purchased several pieces that will stay with my family for life.
I highly recommend giving their online shop a visit or reaching out to them if you have a custom design or piece of traditional Maori art in mind that you cannot find anywhere else.
Whether you’re looking to make a purchase for whanau or business associates, the way in which they present their pieces is also stunning and they make everything themselves, from the harakeke binding to brass holders, and kauri wood or basalt bases, I’ve filmed and held these pieces in my own hands and watched the Sands Studio’s artists working from the raw materials – it’s a beautiful amount of care that goes into every step. I am writing this as I now own several of Alex's works, I absolutely love the beauty and line, the beautiful finish and attention to detail. Each piece an individual one off piece.
