We went to Tanukis Cave on Friday evening and received their usual high standard of service and amazing food. The staff were doing a great job with fast service and being safe wearing masks. Their 25years of experience doing what they do really shows! Will definitely be back again soon.

I don’t understand why this place has such high google rating. Very unpleasant dining experience. This is definitely not an authentic Japanese restaurant. The waiters and waitresses are speaking Korean. The food taste like microwave cooked and not delicious at all. Service are extremely slow and inattentive. Asked for a cup of water and waited for half an hour. Don’t recommend to anyone who want try authentic Japanese food.

I would not recommend if you are a vegetarian. I imagine the meat is great, but the food I could order was really bland - grilled veges with soy sauce on top. I haven't been this disappointed with a meal in years. Having such boring food was a dampener on what was meant to be a special evening. Ambience was nice, and staff were attentive and served us quickly.

I have been coming to Tanukis for well over a decade. The food is amazing, I highly recommend the shrimp and bacon skewers + the sweet corn is a must try. James Ashwin Kakapo Business Sales

One of the OG Japanese spots in Auckland that still holds its own. I love Tanukis Cave, it’s one of the first restaurants I went to when I moved to Auckland 10 years ago and after a 7 year relationship with a Japanese eating their food almost daily and nearly a dozen trips to Japan I’m convinced that this is about as authentic as yakitori gets for Auckland.

I would give zero stars if I could. Very terrible and unpleasant experience. My friend and I visited this restaurant and ordered a lot of skewers. I had immediate vomit and explosive diarrhea within one hour. Sweating and feeling very sick for almost an hour. My friend is vegetarian and she only had some salad so she is fine. They grilled and seasoned the food so you won’t tell when the meat has gone bad. I felt a responsibility to share our terrible experience because this restaurant has no understanding of proper food handling and hygiene. I hope my review prevents others from a ruined night.

The food is yum! Although it take sometime to arrive. Staff are friendly but took a long time to take our order and its hard to get their attention too maybe it was a busy evening that night. If you are big eater and on a budget this place is not for you. But the pork skewers are nice! Im a bit disappointed to the prawn wrapped in bacon as I’ve tasted a better one before. Otherwise i would recommend this place and will come back too.

Really love the atmosphere of this place! There are a lot of options for food and the fact that each order gives you two sticks is really great for sharing. Really enjoyed the mashed kumara with almonds on the outside, but to be honest everything was good. Would come back here again!
