Must stop in if passing by this small cultural reserve. You will find "The Rock of Hatupatu". Hatupatu was a young warrior preist of the Te Arawa people and he was chased by a Bird women called Kurangaituku who resided in the area. The story says that Hatupatu cast a spell on this particular rock causing it to open, he then jumped in and closed the rock behind him to take refuge from Kurangaituku who was in pursuit. You can can read a more detailed version of this wonderful story on signs within the reserve. The main attraction is the rock itself standing over 6 foot one can still see the ellipse shaped hole in which Hatupatu was encapsulated.

Awesome explanation of the history of Hatupatu. Had a plaque that had a few varying stories of his life. Always well maintained and looked after.

Have always stopped here if travelling thru this way and given a gift to the rock as a blessing for the safety of our continued travels. A nice little rest stop.

Stopped here fully by accident and had a lovely chat with a lady who told me the whole story of the place, was such a beautiful experience watching people come and go and hearing people toot there horn <3 I cleaned up abit of rubish in the carpark so just as a reminder to be respectful and clean up after yourself this is a very special place

Stopped here with horse float and large ute. Checked horse, cup of tea, and back out onto highway. Very easy to turn around, good shade for time of day. Interesting history.

Quiet sacred little place. Hatupatus rock is well protected and cared for. Lovely to connect the story to the place.
