★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Must stop in if passing by this small cultural reserve. You will find "The Rock of Hatupatu". Hatupatu was a young warrior preist of the Te Arawa people and he was chased by a Bird women called Kurangaituku who resided in the area. The story says that Hatupatu cast a spell on this particular rock causing it to open, he then jumped in and closed the rock behind him to take refuge from Kurangaituku who was in pursuit. You can can read a more detailed version of this wonderful story on signs within the reserve. The main attraction is the rock itself standing over 6 foot one can still see the ellipse shaped hole in which Hatupatu was encapsulated.
