★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I just purchased some local pounamu here. The shop had stunning pieces/artwork on show, with much more in the store than I realised, with pieces ranging in price. Run by locals, selling jade crafted by them, it’s a small, independent, authentic place to buy kiwi jade.

This was the response to my inquiry as to whether this place might identify and shape found Pounamu. The lady behind the counter was hostile and even though she gave us directions to go see the jade and bone place around the corner, her entire attitude towards us during the interaction was unnecessary and upsetting.
I see there is a For Sale sign up outside, and I'm sorry to see an independent NZ business maybe not survive Covid, but that's no reason to be awful to people.
As it turns out, we hadn't found jade, but serpentine, as we were helpfully informed by the place we went to next.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I had to give one star as there is no 0 star. We visited this store on a Saturday, most of the stores were closed but this one had a sign out front to ring the doorbell. Well, I have never met a more miserable and rude person, it was if I spoilt her day by trying to purchase some green stone gifts, she went out of her way to tell me how much she hates people from Christchurch, we ended up walking out. Would not recommend this store specially if you are from Christchurch

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We visited this business in good faith.. Wow what a miserable soul this shop owner is! And she has this business for sale? Good luck with that attitude Love.
Was told by her she's not there to entertain customers who won't buy from her or tyre kickers for a shop sale.
She then has the audacity to insult the area we came from?! What the Actual F!!!
This person is not a Coaster. She's toxic. I'd avoid the store by all costs. She's a good example of exactly what you don't want to be.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The woman working there is racist. She made horrific comments about Maori, even when I told her I disagreed with her opinion. I walked out of the store. I refuse to support her income through a purchase.
I was nearly speechless at such behaviour surrounded by beautiful pounamu taonga.
It was an incredibly upsetting encounter.
For racial context, I am white and have a Canadian accent.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wish I’d read the previous reviews before entering this shop. Worst experience on the West Coast (and the whole of New Zealand) so far, the shop owner is extremely rude and looking for a way to argue. Please don’t waste your time, energy and money on this person.
We went to Hokitika Craft Gallery instead, where my partner bought the most beautiful pounamu.
