★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is the first place we take visitors from our of town because they do the best fish and chips we have ever had in any part of NZ or overseas. The blue cod is the freshest imaginable and you can often watch as the fishing boat pulls up to the adjoining wharf and unloads it directly into the restaurant kitchen. The crayfish is also succulent and flavourful, especially when grilled with garlic butter. The chips are always cooked to perfection and it's the old fashioned scoop size which is really generous. There is a frequently rotating menu of tasty cabinet foods too, including salads and baking. We've tried many of these and they have always been delicious.
Ambience is 10/10 - a very cool spot with a great view and a cool octopus mural. Beautiful on a sunny day and just as lovely, though in a different way, when the weather is terrible.
Even though they're open air, they are super onto it with vaccine passes, scanning as you order at the counter.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Best fish & chips I’ve had both in ages and in South Island. Bare bones operation but lovely location. Owner is super friendly and up for a chat. Make sure to pet the adorable pug! Great food, views, and doggo. What’s not to love.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We ate here on Good Friday. We had a choice of Blue Cod caught on the day, I think Hapuka caught the day before, crayfish and a few more options. We chose cod as a treat and were not disappointed. The fillet was full size, top and bottom side of the fillet together. I ordered 1 more than we had people, but due to the size we didn't need it. It was so fresh it reheated well the next day. The chips were generous and hard to fault. They provide complimentry chicken salt, tomato sauce and a jug of tartare. For me, the best Blue Cod ever was at Oban on Rakiura, now I'm not so sure.
Mrs O is a 3rd gen fisho, she rated it highly too. We also tried a paua fritter. It's a meal by itself. Very tasty, fresh, great textures. The paua was from the Chathams.
This was not a cheap meal, I'm not sure whether there was a holiday surcharge, but given the first class fish it's still good value.
We ate under cover during a nice sunset. No dress code, I was in my gummies.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Perfect way to have your fish n chips...right over the water. Nothing fancy, nothing pretentious just good old honest fish n chips cooked just right. Blue Cod and a half scoop for only $13.50...generous portions and the staff and service were top notch!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Delicious baked crayfish! The fish and chips was good too. The batter on the fish was thin and crispy. The fish was fresh too. There's a few tables to stand around to eat and one picnic bench. Best to takeaway if you have little children as it will get quite hard to eat the crayfish there standing while trying to mind the children. Plus it gets quite crowded as many people know about this place.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We did a day trip Drive from Christchurch to specifically try The Fishwife and it was worth the drive!
We arrived at 12pm and there were crowds of people down by the wharf where The Fishwife was. Fantastic setting! Our order was 3 Blue Cod, 1 grilled Crayfish, and 1 scoop of chips. This was the freshest, most delicious Blue Cod We have EVER tasted ... who knew it could be this good!? The chips were of a very generous portion and golden crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle. The Crayfish was perfect.
We noted most people had ordered Blue Cod and Crayfish. The Fishwife has an area overlooking the wharf where you can eat. They supply napkins and tomato sauce.
We will definitely come again.
