About The Hive
NICK ASHCROFT – OWNER
My career in the fitness industry has developed from my passion for helping people. Encouraged by my own personal results since starting CrossFit in 2012, I decided to refocus my career into something that would help people experience the positive changes in the body and mind that I had found. Since then, I had an amazing opportunity to co-own the CrossFit gym that started it all for me allowing me to refine my skills as a Coach and Personal Trainer.
Relocating home to Hawkes Bay in 2018 saw the creation of The Hive. The name represents a very personal connection for me and the values of kindness and respect. It also speaks to a broader ideology of a space where, together, with a common goal, under guidance and support, we each work with our own focus to achieve success for ourselves and in turn our community.
Seeing clients set themselves a new challenge and being able to guide them, offer support and see them find support from within our community makes every day an exciting and rewarding one.
As a CrossFit Kids Coach I love that I get to be a part of setting up our future generation with tools to succeed wherever their lives take them; building confidence in themselves, teaching them skills through movement, and making exercise fun and rewarding.
The Hive is much more than just the ‘workout’. It’s about setting you up to succeed; mentally and physically so you are ready for life’s next challenge. It is fun, engaging and rewarding, but for me, it’s the level of genuine care at The Hive that really makes the difference.

β β β β β I find Nicks style of teaching is focused mainly around mobility and technique, by concentrating on those basics, he manages to push us all during workouts, with most beating our personal bests monthly if not weekly. Highly Reccomended for any person of any fitness level to come in for a workout!

β β β β β When a friend suggested we start doing CrossFit when The Hive opened in December of 2018, my response was... mostly giggling. I was a 42-year-old woman whose fitness consisted primarily of walking at the time. Friend, I do not do CrossFit. But hey, I'll try anything once. I walked in with a list of demands: I don't want to get injured, I don't want to bulk up, etc. The usual CrossFit misconceptions. But I kept an open mind.
Fast forward a year, and I'm honestly in the best shape in my life -- and yes, I'm including my teenage years. I'm about as lean as I was then as well.
I've stuck with it because Nick has created an incredibly safe and supportive space -- a space where I regularly do workouts I honestly wouldn't think I'm capable of! There's a lot of variety from one CrossFit gym/box to the next, but I love The Hive because of the incredible variety of people there -- all ages, shapes, and sizes. I used to think CrossFit was only for people who were already super-fit, but now I think anyone can do CrossFit. And should.
This isn't a bootcamp, this is life-long fitness. There's an incredible amount of variety from day to day to keep you engaged and a yoga class each week as well.
Also important to mention is that there's an amazing amount of individual attention at The Hive. Class sizes are small, and Nick is brilliant at tailoring the workouts to each individual. And I've gotten as much from it mentally as I have physically -- both from my relationships with the other members and coaches, and from achieving goals I didn't think possible for myself.
My recommendation? Don't wait.

β β β β β I started at The Hive a few months ago, with much dragging of feet; I just figured it wouldn't be for me. I'm a total convert now and can't recommend The Hive highly enough. Amazing instructors, a well equipped, fit-for-purpose space, and really welcoming members. There are loads of options in the timetable, the equipment is in great condition, and the level of service is top notch. if you're a crossfit sceptic like I was but want to give it a go, then this is the place for you. You won't regret it!

β β β β β I joined the Hive when I moved to Napier from Auckland last year.
Not only is the space beautiful and clean, it has been the perfect place to make new friends, as well as keep fit and strong.
The programming, inclusive welcoming culture and dedication they show to all the humans in the space is awe inspiring. They care deeply about everyones progress and will meet you wherever you are at when you come in.
For me, it was coming back to exercise after having a baby. The transition was so smooth and I was catered for with so much care.
One of my favourite things about the Hive is that everyone is so different. Such a big range of ages and stages and altogether we each get everything we came in for. Celebration is a massive part of this culture.
I am so grateful for this space.
Your whole self is welcome here...even if that looks like dancing along to the songs in-between sets. It has kept me sane during lockdowns and enables me to be a better version of myself for myself, my family and my work.

β β β β β The Hive is so much more than your average CrossFit gym. Nickβs unique approach to fitness provides a more bespoke experience that provides each member with everything they need to succeed at reaching their wellness goals. The mobility sessions are a great compliment to the strength training and metabolic conditioning an are an important part of maintaining balance in your training and keeping you healthy, which other gyms donβt pay nearly enough attention to. Highly recommended.

β β β β β The Hive is amazing!
Small class sizes and friendly professional coaches. Caters to all skill levels. Is well equipped with a range of times on offer to fit into most schedules.
I hadnβt done CrossFit before joining The Hive, itβs not as crazy as it seams! Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to get more out of their fitness.
