β β β β β Positive: Fabulous location, character building, friendly hosts, very clean and lovely facilities, really appreciated the plunger coffee in the kitchen :) Great seafood chowder at the game fishing club across the road.. Negative: Just one issue with the exit light sign right outside the french doors which did disturb our sleep..

β β β β β The new hotel managers May and Dennis were going over and beyond with everything and made this stay the most memorable we ever had anywhere. Down to earth and welcoming, the two treated us like family. We booked a room in the main building, everything was sparkling clean, modern and we had a stunning view from the balcony over the harbour. We loved the common areas, balcony and kitchen. There is even a BBQ for use and everything is super easy. Off street parking provided. We made lots of daytrips from Whangaroa - the area and beaches are just stunning. We needed only 2 hours to cape reinga and every day was a new adventure. It's a hidden gem for the normal traveller. Lots of fishing going on too if you're interested. Thanks May and Dennis!! β β β β β Positive: Very clean upstairs room with balcony overlooking the bay. Stunning, serene, ever-changing views. Items provided to make a satisfying breakfast in the shared kitchen. Handy Fishing Club over the road, for dinner. May was a most helpful hostess. Will definitely stay again and recommend it..

β β β β β The Marlin has great potential. Unfortunately, it was outrageously noisy on two of the three nights stayed with two separate partyβs going on within the accommodation. This is NOT suitable for young families. One party was highly inappropriate for accommodation of this type. Furthermore, one of the hosts (Dennis) is very rude at best. I know this is at odds with other reviews but - you have been warned. A very generous one star!

β β β β β It should be noted that this Hotel is under new management and the positive reviews here are mainly for the previous owners. The place is clean and tidy and co owner Mae is lovely and a great host. Dennis however is aggressive, rude and should not be in hospitality. Unfortunately with his disposition this hotel is doomed to fail. The facilities are no longer open under the new management with the Bar and Restaurant closed, so the place is now only accommodation. The managers also don't stay on site, so anyone can do what they want at night. therefore, it does seem to be party central with thin walls where you can hear everything. I would not stay here again and this review is the polite version of my experience out of respect to Mae who should run this place alone and have Dennis remove himself. You have been warned. DO NOT stay here
