About The New Zealand Portrait Gallery

We tell the stories of New Zealanders through the art of portraiture.

The New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te PΕ«kenga Whakaata was founded in 1990 as a charitable trust. We have been in our permanent home in Shed 11 on Wellington’s waterfront since 2010.

We enable audiences to encounter portraits of New Zealanders who, in all their diversity, have shaped our country’s development or influenced the way we think about ourselves. Through portraiture, we offer perspectives on ourselves, our history, our creativity, and our place in the world.

The Gallery relies almost exclusively on donations from individuals and organisations for its ongoing work, and on the sponsorship of the Adam Foundation for its biennial portrait competition. We would not exist without the hard work and dedication of our many volunteers who serve on our Board of Trustees, as team members and on our committees.

The Gallery relies almost exclusively on donations from individuals and organisations to fund for its ongoing work, and on sponsors to fund its annual portrait competitions – the Adam Portraiture Award and the Kiingi Tuheitia Portraiture Award. We would not exist without the hard work and dedication of our many volunteers who serve on our Board of Trustees our committees and as team members.

Very few pieces of art but interesting. Fun activity for the kids, drawing on a large roll of paper.

Our visit timed with the Maori artists exhibition, some great portraits and exhibits, well set out with seating. Tidy restroom if needed.

My favourite art gallery in Wellington. It's quite compact, so you can spend time looking at each painting photo and not get overwhelmed by hundreds. They change their exhibits regularly, which is a bonus.

Absolutely loved the quality of the work in here and the variety. We popped in for a look and it was peaceful and relaxing and I particularly loved this seraphine pick painting stunning!

Its fine. A lot crammed in to an already small space, and injudicious use of the centre of the room, made it feel cramped and forced us up close to the works. We were there to see the Cook exhibition on Hamilton East in the 1990s.

The two times I've been here the lady at the front desk has always been very knowledgeable about the exhibitions in the gallery and very pleasant to talk to, the art is always mean looking at nz life through a lense or paint brush love it
