Our Story

The Hastings Tribune has survived tornadoes, fires and facelifts during its 110 years of publication. Adam Breede purchased the Independent-Tribune then changed the name to the Hastings Tribune. It published weekly until the paper became a daily on Oct. 2, 1905.

The Tribune survived a lot of early competition, which included 10 weekly and three daily papers that started and folded in Adams County.

Breede family members sold the newspaper to Fay Seaton and his sons on June 30, 1937, with Fred Seaton named the publisher. Fred Seaton went on to be a member of President Eisenhower's Cabinet in 1956, serving as Secretary of Interior.

Fred Seaton died Jan. 16, 1974 at age 64. His son, Don Seaton, was named publisher. He retired in 2010.

During the their tenure, the newspaper survived the community's biggest storm and a fire that ravaged the newspaper's office.

In 1930, a tornado ripped through Hastings, crippling the newspaper's wire service and damaging the Tribune building. Four years later, a fire broke out in the building and almost every machine in the building was damaged.

Through both major catastrophes, the Tribune staff worked to make sure the paper would be published without missing a day.

Today, the Tribune serves 10 counties in Nebraska and Kansas. The newspaper was the first in Nebraska to be made available over the Internet and offers and online subscription service along with its traditional carrier, motor and mail routes.
