Ohakune and Turoa are not just Winter paradises; they are fabulous Summer destinations too. Ride the Old Coach Road, watch a sunset from Mt Ruapehu, enjoy cute cafes and take a walk in some beautiful forests.

An awesome place to ski in the north island with great runs, parks and back country runs. Cafe and bar facilities. Great for beginners with learning area, sledding area and lessons. If your more advanced you can challenge yourself with steeper runs from the top of the mountain, lots of fun for skiers and snowboarders alike.

Good facilities, plenty of staff at hand who are all very friendly and accommodating. Heaps of parking and shuttle service to the main entrance. Only thing I could fault it on would be steep cafe prices. Overall a pleasant experience, good for a trip with friends and family.

Just an early winter drive! We had an hour or two spare after some business in Ohakune. So we drove up to Turoa. WOT. A. BEAUTIFUL. DRIVE. There wasn’t any snow- the snowline was beyond the top carpark- so it wasn’t the snow that was magical. The scenery is SPECTACULAR. The podocarp forest on the ascent, the views of Mount Taranaki/ Egmont, the AWE of Tongariro. I’d do it again. Just go for a drive.

Great ski resort. Managed to go there when it was actually snowing. Staff greet you upon arrival and are very helpful. Don’t forget to bring snow chains if driving a 2 wheel drive car, but can go up if driving a 4WD or an AWD.

So disorganized. How is it possible on a bluebird day to have only one of many lifts open. Huge queues made worse by not managing the queue into groups of 3 for a 3 seater chair. Half the chairs have only two people on them. Three lift operators standing round chatting instead of queue managing. This one chair only opened at 10:30 am (2 hours cut out of the ski day we pay for and get up at the crack of dawn for), lift opening delay was due to de-icing. Every other mountain has this done by 8am on most lifts! Where is management? RAL = Runs after Lunch.

This side of Mt Ruapehu or Tongariro National Park offers a much better sight-seeing experience than Whakapapa Skifield. As you can see from the photos that in a fine day Mt Taranaki can be seen. The drive uphill or downhill will require snow chains, as it’s more steep & narrow when compared to the Whakapapa
