About Unity Books
ISBN: 9780571356522Title: Miss Dior: A Story of Courage & Couture
Author: PICARDIE JUSTINE
'A gripping story in which Justine Picardie brilliantly contrasts the cruel Old World of wartime France with the hopeful New World epitomised by Christian Dior's New Look.'
ANTONIA FRASER
Miss Dior is a story of freedom and fascism, beauty and betrayal, roses and repression, and how the polished surface of fashion conceals hidden depths.
It paints a portrait of the enigmatic woman behind the designer Christian Dior: his beloved younger sister Catherine, who inspired his most famous perfume and shaped his vision of femininity. Justine Picardie's journey takes her to Occupied Paris, where Christian honed his couture skills while Catherine dedicated herself to the French Resistance, until she was captured by the Gestapo and deported to the German concentration camp of Ravensbrück.
With unparalleled access to the Dior family homes and archives, Picardie's research into Catherine's courageous life shines a new light on Christian Dior's legendary work, and reveals how his enchanting 'New Look' emerged out of the shadows of his sister's suffering.
Tracing the wartime paths of the Dior siblings leads Picardie deep into other hidden histories, and different forms of resistance and sisterhood. She explores what it means to believe in beauty and hope, despite our knowledge of darkness and despair, and discovers the timeless solace of the natural world in the aftermath of devastation and destruction. The result is an exquisite and unforgettably moving book.

β β β β β I've never been in person (I'm in the UK) but they provided a great service recently when I ordered some books for a friend who lives in Wellington. The special orders team kept me updated during their lockdown and sorted my order really quickly as soon as they could. Lovely service!

β β β β β So disappointed with an online order. For some reason they mark their deliveries 'ATL' - which means the delivery company will just leave the parcel anywhere without ensuring it is in a safe place. Of course my order was left in a vulnerable place and was stolen. $100 worth of books gone. Be aware of this when ordering online. When i mentioned to unity what had happened, they simply replied saying it's 'unfortunate'.

β β β β β I've been to the Unity book store in Auckland but I've got to say the Wellington store is in another league of its own. The open layout with recommendations and high shelves makes for a fun time browsing. Your eyes will always travel to the next exciting book that might become your next new favourite. The small cards showing that the staff have read the books are very helpful as I don't have to try search for online reviews.
I walked in recently trying to think of a gift idea for my partner. Immediately I was greeted by a lovely staff member who asked me what genres and price range I was looking at. They led me over to the relevant section and showed me some books that aligned with my partner's intetests. I was very pleased with the recommendation and would go back just to chat to the lovely person who served me βΊοΈ.
I needed up browsing for 30 minutes more to look at the other books they had to offer. I love that they had quirky postcards and small books at the front in case you didn't feel like committing to buying a book and just wanted to settle for something small.
Love visiting here when I can. The overall team seem very kind and genuinely interested in what they do. Thank you Willis St Unity for always being so great!
