Bch MD, Bch Surg BDS, FRCS, (OMFS) MFDS

Mr. David Chin-Shong graduated Medicine in 1996 from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and Dentistry in 2002 from University College Cork. He pursued his specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in London and Liverpool, receiving his Consultant qualifications in 2006. David is Irish with an Asian father whom he credits with teaching him the importance of hard work and diligence, and an Irish mother who stressed people skills and the art of communication (and his sense of humor!).

Despite his UK specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, David’s outstanding interest is to make a patient’s experience, especially for those that are anxious, a positive one. From taking out a tooth or removing a skin cancer – ensuring the patient understands and feels in control of the process is his top priority.

He is a proud recipient of two UK Aesthetic Dentistry awards which he credits to the importance of teamwork and he is very excited to be a part of the team at Wellington Oral Surgery.

David enjoys following his children’s sporting pursuits. Since moving to the Southern hemisphere he has been able to enjoy outdoor activities including camping, barbeques, and golf.

During the year we will be providing implant based courses for practitioners wanting to start restoring implants, and also for experienced practitioners. David will demonstrate the latest 3D techniques for planning and creating surgical stents and bio models.

I had Dr David Shin-Chong as my surgeon for a 4x wisdom tooth extraction. I highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for someone they can have complete trust in to do the job safe and efficiently. David is very kind and patient-focused. David was reassuring throughout the entire process and made me felt at ease before getting the surgery through IV sedation. David outlined the process in detail and does not shy away from procedures that prove difficult. There was a possibility that one of my teeth needed to be taken out at the hospital through general anaesthetic due to the complexity. Despite this, David did an exceptional job at successfully removing the tooth that was incredibly close to the nerve, all while maintaining great pain management. Thank you very much! :)

I recently had a couple of wisdom teeth removed, and one of them was literally sideways, so a bit of a big deal. The procedure performed by Dr. David Chin-Shong and his team was remarkably painless (except of course for the 1st needle but that's to-be-expected), I didn't feel my teeth coming out, my body had no problems with the sedative they used, and it all took less than an hour.

I had all four wisdom teeth removed by Dr. David Chin-Shong roughly two months ago. It was my only experience with Wellington Oral Surgery and I was prompted by good Google reviews to book in with him specfically. However, my experiences with David over the course of a month and a half through various scans and appointments did not reflect the reviews that got me through the door in the first place whatsoever. The first consultation was incredibly nerve-wracking for me as I have never had a medical procedure or surgery before. David ran through the potential complications as if he were MCing an auction, and barely took time to answer my questions before walking out the door and showing me to reception, who could not provide me with answers either. I left that feeling even more wracked with nerves than when I walked in. The surgery itself went smoothly, I spent most of my time before and after it with the Bowen hospital staff, who were lovely, professional, and reassuring. However, I felt even more rushed at the follow up appointment that lasted no longer than 10 minutes. Which is ironic, considering I had to wait 45 minutes after our scheduled appointment time to see David. David did not even sit down during the follow up even though I expressed I was having some concerns about my healing and had been having sinus issues during recovery. After I asked each question he literally tried to walk out the door to end the appointment, only walking back into the room to answer my question, before trying to walk out again. He did not even examine my healing until I asked him to take a look. That appointment ended with him walking out to reception, so I had to follow him and ask my final question infront of his reception and other customers.... I would have also liked David to tell me that one of the wisdom tooth extraction sites was deeper than the others, according to an emergency dentist I saw tonight, which apparently may take a while to become 'less deep' (if it does) and would require me to pay much more attention to cleaning than the other sections of my mouth - particularly if I wanted to avoid infections in this area (not fun). Like another recent reviewer (who I happened to meet in the waiting room before the surgery) stated, a little empathy and professionalism would have gone a long way. Particularly for those who are young, anxious, or have not had a medical procedure of this nature before.

I want to preface by saying that my wisdom surgery removal of all 4 teeth under general anaesthetic went very smoothly and that my healing process was very easy. David Chin-Shong is very good at what he does and I am very happy with the overall outcome of the procedure. With that being said, I felt very rushed at my consultation and definitely came out of it much more nervous for the surgery than I was before it. I still had questions about the procedure but I was promptly escorted out and David was already onto his next patient by this time so his reception were unable to provide me with answers. I actually met someone in the waiting room of the hospital who was having the exact same procedure as me and also with David. They had also expressed that their consultation felt rushed and anxiety inducing, which was a shame to hear but also a relief that I had not been the only one with the same experience. I understand that there is a huge demand for the surgery and that David is probably a very busy man who does the same consultations and surgeries every week, so potentially he just sticks to the same script. I would highly suggest being a bit more empathetic in the future as the majority of people getting their wisdom teeth out are quite young and have never had surgery before, so comforting bedside manner would have been really appreciated, and I am very thankful that the hospital staff were able to provide this and put me at ease.

Had 4 wisdom teeth removed recently by David Chin-Shong. Couldn’t recommend him enough. From consultation, surgery to follow up appointment, was very professional, informative and answered any questions I had. Recovery was very fast and easy. No complications at all ?

I had all 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed about 5 months ago and I could not be happier. Dr David Shin-Chong and the team ensured this process went as smoothly as possible. The surgery was done at Bowen Hospital under GA and was fairly quick. I took close to a week off to recovery as I had a pretty rough time from the medication and swelling. After that I was pretty much back to normal and started to eat everything I used too. It's a tough week eating soft foods but you only have to do it once in your life and I do feel a lot better without the crammed teeth. I recovered quickly without any issues and felt basically "fully" recovered by around 3 weeks. I was very serious about keeping my mouth clean and did regular salt washes which paid off. I highly recommend Wellington Oral Surgery if you are looking to get any serious dental work done as they really put me at ease as I was very nervous going into this. 10/10

Had two wisdom teeth out with surgeon David. I am a very anxious wee person. But David and his amazing team made me feel so comfortable. The procedure wasn't bad at all (I did local). My recovery has been great. The team lets you listen to any music you want. David also handled my sense of humor very well, despite it being a flop of a joke. 10/10

I had 4x wisdom teeth removed by David Chin-Shong and I could not recommend him more highly. The procedure was efficient and with IV sedation I did not remember it. Recovery was quick and not very painful at all. The medication I was given meant I had minimal swelling and I was back feeling fit and healthy in no time! I was very nervous for the procedure, but had no reason to be as David was very kind and professional at all stages. The nurses and other staff were also all very lovely. Thank you team!
