★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wheelchair access to Wharekai on wet day difficult especially if Wharenui is closed.How does one get in, where is alternative?No signs.Also told my Careperson could not enter Wharenui to take me to Wharekai for our event, as had not visited Marae before.So there I sat till someone rescued me. Not good access on wet day.Late for meeting.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Waitangi Day Celebrations in partnership with Founders Park - had a great time there. Lots to see and eat. Entertainment spot on - would recommend this event as a must do when in town

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The whare has beautiful tukutuku and whakairo to work that any Maori can take inspiration from.
There is great air-conditioning in the whare nui as well which makes stays very comfortable.
This includes a large commercial washing machine and dryer for the linen.
The whare kai is very well laid out and set up. The kitchen has everything one needs to cater for large hui.
It even includes a separate washing machine for the teatowels only.
The front of the whare kai has a large grassed area that often rings out with happy children playing.
The rear of the Marae houses the kaumatua in separate well kept comfortable 2 bedroom whare.
The administration block area also has a well resourced Kohanga Reo, a gym, and health services.
Whakatu Marae is utilised by the many iwi in Te Tau Ihu.
It is well placed near the Nelson CBD, lovely gardens, the 'Centre of New Zealand' walk, Founders Heritage Park, Trafalgar Centre and Trafalgar Park, and is on the bus route to town.
