★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I was told I wasn’t allowed to surf at the real surf spot in Whangamata - the bar, because they didn’t want to disturb the locals who surf there. Coming from South Africa and surfing waves like J-Bay regularly which is one of the more localized waves in the world this is utterly ridiculous. What a terrible way to run a business. I was also told that the bar was for “experts” only and I should surf the close out in front of the school because those were good waves. What a sour taste after hiring a board. I’ll never go back. I don’t recommend this business at all. Most of the soft top boards are missing fins and the 6’3 pop out epoxy I hired had been snapped and repaired. At 20NZD for an hour on a dog of a board this place is a rip off.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Excellent experience, partner got me a 3 day lesson pass for Xmas - Great first lesson with a lot of good tips, do's & dont's & beach "Rip" awareness, which I think is important for anybody!! Thanks teacher :)
2nd & 3rd lesson was the best because I had learnt a lot and wanted to improve each time I caught a wave or made a mistake, big shout out to Phoenix , for all your great support and encouragement along the way. Definatly want to carry it on and get amongst it!

My young daughters found them so friendly and easy to understand that they could learn comfortably. They both enjoyed the experience thoroughly. Totally recommend Whangamata Surf School!

Thanks Jack, Hunter, Julianna, Hannah and all the team that helped us - had a great few days starting to learn with myself and two of my kids, with all of us getting up and managing to ride a few waves - helped tick a bucket list item for me... and something else we can now do as a family . highly recommend the team here if you are thinking about giving it a go

Have been meaning to get back into surfing for years. Seeing the setup on Whanga Beach today there were 0 excuses not to give it a go!!
I was EXTRA happy with the lesson. Lots of fun with clear, simple instructions it didn’t take long to get up. The pointers on do’s, don’t s and etiquette will def come in handy when out solo.
Will be back for another lesson to take things up a level. Thanks again Hannah and Julianna!
