β β β β β Ian took time to take my vehicle for a test drive and diagnose the problem and then advise the action that would need to be taken. There was no pressure to get the work done and advice was very helpful.

β β β β β Disappointed to be quoted one price and charged another, significantly higher. Apart from that, was OK.

β β β β β I haven't got anything positive to say about my experience with A B Automatics. If I could give a negative star rating, I would.
Check the bill before paying, I would have been significantly overcharged if I hadn't checked.
Don't believe the website when it says there's a team of mechanics, in reality it is a one man show so jobs take months to be completed.

β β β β β Not sure what the previous reviewer is going on about but I found the owner very pleasant, he answered all my questions with no problem.
While the previous transmission specialist I took my car too wanted to replace the transmission Ian repaired my transmission at a significant saving over the previous quoted price and in a timely manner with a better warranty.

β β β β β Our initial dealing with AB Automatic involved Ian Owen rebuilding a faulty transmission for us. on a Honda CRV. Timeline, communication and service was exception. The vehicle ran superbly for a number of years after that. Finally it was high kms that lead to us selling it. I was really surprised with how fluid the trans changes were following the rebuild on this older vehicle. Since then we use AB Automatic regularly. Ian has given us experienced advice if we have been going to purchase a new vehicle and saved us money through thoughtful advice. I totally recommend AB Automatics and would be happy to provide further info to prospective clients. Richard Duffy

β β β β β Bruce White, I was in the other room while your discussion with Ian was happening, and after seeing your review had to comment.
I have to say you were anything but sympathetic to the owners bereavement, I got the impression from your comments that Ian should have not taken time off for this and been working on your gearbox instead, you never once expressed sympathy.
As for the black mail, "I don't want to be charged for the work you did for me, if you do I'm going to leave a negative review" plus the verbal personal abuse you were insulting Ian with I can only praise Ian for keeping his cool, if it was me I would've thrown you out the door without opening it.
Ian did not ask you for part numbers he asked you to bring in the parts you had removed when you tried to dismantle the gearbox so he could get the bearing numbers, your response was that you didn't need to bring them in.
I questioned Ian about the job he was doing for you and it seems he only charged you the labour for dismantling the gearbox, which you instructed him to do and didn't charge you for partially reassembling the gearbox on the request of your partner.
Do you not think it is fair to pay for work you have requested to be carried out??
Do you tell your boss "I didn't do that as you wanted so dock my pay"??
As for worse condition when returned...........Ian tells me the gearbox was returned to you partially dismantled and all the parts were in the same condition as when you dropped them off, how is that worse condition?
Mr White do you often lie about things?? It seems your review is nothing to do with facts and is instead based on what you can say to damage a business, which is what you threatened to do.

I have had my vehicle back for a few weeks and all I can say is when I bought this vehicle the transmission had not long been rebuilt by another transmission specialist in Dunedin, which was just over two years ago.
Ian found a manufacturing defect when he rebuilt the transmission a few weeks ago and now it's like driving a totally different vehicle, it is so responsive compared to before.

β β β β β Should have been on alert when Ian didn't bother turning up until 8.30 am when the advertised opening time is 8 am. Was quoted approx $140 for a tune up and to check the automatic. Nothing additional was done and no parts were used. When I turned up he said the charge was $202 and I handed over my bank card. When I checked my account that night he'd taken $567.46. When I contacted him he said that's what he'd told me he was charging to my card. Still hasn't provided me with a detailed invoice despite several emails requesting one. This guy is an absolute rip off. Don't trust him and don't go there. I'm now having to take him to the Disputes Tribunal.. So see you there Ian..

β β β β β Had a great experience with AB. My starter motor died at a horrible time and Ian had it sorted quick. Checked prices and options with me before proceeding, gave a rough idea on price. Have recommended to many friends and family!
