About A'Oga Amata Newtown
Mission & Philosophy
The A'oga Amata (beginning school) was established in 1985 by Rev Risatisone & Fereni Ete to provide an early childhood education in the Samoan language, increase participation of Samoan children in early childhood education and to encourage Samoan women to undertake training as early childhood teachers.
Who attends the A'oga Amata
Initially, enrolments were from Samoan families who used Samoan as the preferred language of the home, and who were not using mainstram early childhood services in their communities.
Current trends are challenging the A'oga Amata to respond to the changing needs of families associated with the service.
First, Samoan households are changing in many nuanced ways, affecting the languages used by parents in the home and by children at the centre.
Second, non-Samoan families are enrolling their children at the A'oga Amata, resulting in an increase in cultural and linguistic diversity.
The A'oga Amata places a high value achieving the goal of inclusion set out in the national early childhood curriculum, Te Whariki, for early childhood education services in Aotearoa New Zealand.
For all families enrolling a child at the A'oga Amata, we commit to caring for your child in developping mentally appropriate environments, including parents and caregivers in our early childhood community.
Support
The A'oga Amata thanks to the McCarthy Trust for funding resources for it's bilingual programme.
