About AA Driving School
Important overseas driver licence conversion changes effective 1 August 2016
The NZTA is making changes to further strengthen the driver licencing system. As part of this change from 1 August 2016:
- There will be fewer locations where you can apply to convert your overseas driver licence (find agent)
- Your application will be sent to the Transport Agency for a decision. Most applications will be completed in three weeks. You will be contacted if your application is delayed. If the licence you are converting has been issued by an authority from an ‘Approved country’ below, you will most likely be given a temporary licence immediately.
Please allow plenty of time to get your New Zealand licence. Your overseas licence is only valid for up to 12 months and must meet New Zealand licencing requirements.
Applications are processed at our counters and forwarded to NZTA for approval. At times there are additional delays on overseas conversion applications and the approval may take up to 20 working days. Once you’ve been issued with a New Zealand driver licence you will no longer be able to use your overseas driver licence for driving in New Zealand.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I did not enjoy the experience I had with my driving instructor. I was made very uncomfortable throughout. I was extremely nervous and the instructors manner made things much worse. I've been trying to go back for more lessons hoping to get a new driving instructor. I've even indicated this when applying for new lessons, but I still get set up with the same instructor. I don't proceed further than that.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Absolute waste of time... each lesson was cut short at least 30-40 minutes every time. Also, the practical lesson was meant to be on a Saturday, and the night before the instructor postponed it to the following week. Then when I finally got to sit the practical course, the instructor did not show up to the confirmed location, and 5 minutes before the lesson was meant to start she phoned me saying her 'car had broken down.' She then asked me to travel 15 minutes further into central Hamilton to her location for the lesson (at 5pm - peak traffic time, very daunting for an in-experienced driver) Then the lesson was not even 5 minutes long... we went around the block once and the instructor started signing my certificate. This lesson did NOT ease my nerves for my driving test at all and did not prepare me whatsoever.
