★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Most beauty therapists are not a fan of people like me - I take care of my skin by eating well, getting enough sleep, and not smoking, and I don't buy into the pseudo-science of skin products or the guilt tripping that comes with it. I don't use any harsh chemicals or scented products on my skin, and coconut oil and a scrub with baking soda is about all I do. I don't wear sunscreen every day as I'm Vitamin D deficient and in summer use zinc oxide and good old staying in the shade. All that aside, I like getting facials because a bit of pampering and relaxation never goes amiss and I like having stuff rubbed on my face in a dark quiet room having a bit of a glow the rest of the day. This was the second time I had the Island Time facial. The lomi lomi massage was heavenly and I simply melted, I was so relaxed, as well as the foot massage which was so gentle and lovely. The facial was nice too, but I was quite annoyed that when it was done, the therapist gave me no time to just relax for a few minutes but wanted to grill me more about my skincare routine, sell me products and book another appointment. I know this is part of the song and dance - they have to try and push the products, make you feel inadequate, and get you back in to spend more but the timing was all wrong. It's probably the training but to be honest it nearly spoiled the whole experience. I would recommend if you want to just relax to tell them ahead of time that you don't want to discuss anything while you're on the table and you'll be happy to have a chat about products etc after you've gotten changed. Then you can politely decline if you're not interested (or have a proper look if you are), pay and leave.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ About Man in Ponsonby are awesome for facials and especially Laura, I got a complete voucher to have a facial as a birthday gift. What an incredible experience, they offer you beer on arrival and I chose Asahi although there is also whiskey. The actual facial treatment for this particular voucher is great and my face has never felt so good, the skincare products are very high quality. The shoulder massage after is fantastic. I'm so appreciative to About Man for their care, guidance and advice. I go regularly now and I've not had any shave rash ever since, worth it.
