★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Across the Cultures" is a pebble mosaic in Western Park created by artist John Botica. From the Ponsonby road entrance to Western Park (Tuna Mau), follow the main path into the heart of the park for about 200 meters, then take the footpath on the left. The installation will be about 30 meters ahead.
The 3 meter diameter mosaic is composed of New Zealand sourced pebbles set on edge: black - Kawakawa Bay Auckland; gray - Nuhaka Beach, Gisbourne; white - Hokitika Region; golden - Moeraki Beach and Otara Beach, Otago. Jonh Botica said of his material choice, "The pebbles that I use in my works are all sourced from the pure and natural landscape of New Zealand. I take great pride in knowing that the stones come from a quality source and will last for centuries to come."
The design features palms, korus and frangipani-- images important to Maoris and Polynesians.
Photos of the mosaic from its installation in 2008 show fresh unblemished pebbles with a bright bronze medallion in the center. Since then the pebbles have mellowed with age, the grout has been dusted with decayed leaves, and the bronze medallion gained a verdigris patina. Age has only enhanced this artwork making it appear as though it has always been part of the park.
Of particular interest is the center "medallion"--actually a sculpted drainage cover. This decorative drain in the center of the slightly concave form of the mosaic hints at a very different impression of the piece during a rainstorm. I hope some intrepid person will post photos of "Across the Cultures" on a rainy day!
