About Allsorts Dog Training

Estelle Leyshon has a long history and experience with dogs. Growing up with a wide range of animals, she went on to study a Bachelor of Science at Birmingham University before landing her dream job as head of re-homing at a branch of Battersea Dog’s & Cat’s Home in the UK.

Over the next eight years Estelle was able to hone her skills with all kinds of breeds and behaviours as she trained and assessed the behaviour of dogs for rehoming, and matched potential owners to their perfect pet. She quickly discovered that many serious behavioural issues were resolved when she utilised a dog’s natural breed or working talent. This resulted in her successfully rehoming hundreds of dogs to specialist fields such as the armed forces, biosecurity and as assistance dogs.

She attended a variety of dog behaviour and training courses whilst at Battersea and at the Northern Centre for Canine Behaviour. Today she is continuing her education through a 3 year behaviour qualification with the School for Canine Science and aims to also complete a prestigious Canine Behaviour qualification with the Karen Pryor Academy in 2022.

She has also competed in a variety of dog sports. In the past she focused particularly on Heelwork to Music ( a form or dog tricks), as the creative training appealed to her more than mainstream obedience. Currently she enjoys all forms on Tracking and Scent Detection and is learning about Treibball too with an aim to teach it in future.

Estelle’s passion for working dogs culminated in her adoption of Border Collie Brock, who at 18 months would become her biggest teacher yet.
As an established part of the family, with a strong personality, Brock soon helped other foster dogs to learn the ropes, providing Estelle with valuable insights into how dogs communicate, influence and build relationships. Estelle and Brock’s strong bond of trust developed the foundation for Estelle’s training and she continues to train all dogs using techniques she learnt from her time with Brock.

Estelle’s greatest challenge and achievement came with her other Border Collie Rush when they passed an initial assessment for Search and Rescue Training. Eighteen months later, after many hours of training in all weather and situations, Estelle qualified with Rush as an operational Track and Area Search Dog Handler team. Estelle’s time together in NSARDA proved to be extremely rewarding and she went on to assess and train new members to the team. She got to work with various handlers and types of dogs like mongrels, Hovawarts, Rottweilers, Collies, Labradors, Spaniels, Newfoundlands and even a Russian Black Terrier. This experience helped her identify many of the natural abilities different dogs possess and how to channel those into positive outcomes with a variety of handlers too. Rush died of old age during Covid 19 Lockdown and is eternally missed.

When she moved to New Zealand in 2011 she flew both Brock and Rush, and her 2 cats, with her as she could not bear to be parted from them.
Now settled in the Bay of Plenty she is currently home to a range of animals - cats, chickens, goats, horses and of course dogs:
  • Hope, a 1 year old Beardie x from a litter she whelped and raised along with 7 of her siblings and from a fostered pregnant rescue dog
  • Stumpy, a 13yr old rescue JRT x Papillon
  • Rusty, a 7yr old rescue Papillon x
  • Honey, a rescue 13yr old GWPointer x Greyhound
  • Luna, a 6yr old rescue heading dog
RESIDENT FOSTER DOGS IN TRAINING
  • Snow, a 8 year old large Hunterway x Catachoula long term rescue foster dog who is deaf and suffered with severe separation anxiety and resource guarding
  • Kora, a  17 month old deaf Bull Terrier x, foster dog - partially deaf - separation worry and fearful of new people.
  • Ozzie, a 21 month old Bearded Collie - suffered from severe resource guarding and excessive barking.
  • Scout, a 9 month old Bearded Collie x Hunterway - excessive barking, compulsive behaviours and vehicle chasing.
She continues to be passionate about rescue dogs and work closely with a number of NZ Rescue Charities. She can foster 2-3 at any one time and works with them pro bono until they are successfully placed in to new loving homes. In total she has fostered over 50 since being in NZ.
It is through watching the interactions of the dogs together that Estelle has learnt how to read dog's body language, understand how they may be feeling and what positive training methods are required to help them. She believes that all relationships are one based on mutual benefit, support and co-operation. She feels privileged to be able to share her life with them all and be the stepping stone to a more positive future for many of them.

Such a great puppy training course- we learnt heaps and was very focused on the behaviour of dogs and how to interpret that effectively and therefore get positive outcomes. Highly recommend. Intense, specific training I thought.
