About Athenree Homestead

Athenree Homestead was built by Irish settler/pioneers Hugh and Adela Stewart in 1879 and was a working farmhouse for 30 years up to their departure in 1906. It played an important role in the history of Athenree and Katikati - the whole area being part of a planned Irish settlement.

After the Stewarts’ departure the property had various owners and the house became derelict.  Concerned residents in the area formed a Trust to restore the home to its original state and fundraising and restoration work has continued for many years.

Over the past two years the rear of the building - consisting of several rooms - was completely rebuilt.

The old Athenree Railway Station was moved to the site and restored and the grounds and roadside gardens were established.

A great job was done of restoring the Homestead. The attention to detail is amazing. So great that our history has been preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Such a beautiful setting for a historic home. We enjoyed a Sunday Devonshire Tea then strolled around the property. Big trees, gorgeous gardens and a stunning view to the Tauranga Harbour and ocean beyond.

A big thank you to the ladies who catered for the high tea luncheon on Thursday 2nd Dec. for Daisy Chain Garden Club. The food was beautiful, and homemade. The tables were set with fine China and flowers from the homestead gardens. The Athenree Homestead is an asset to Katikati.

This Homestead that has been lovingly restored is set on beautiful surrounding grounds, with the adjacent old Railway station (moved from the gorge) where you can enjoy tea/coffee with cream and scones ladies you lovely volunteers thankyou for your help and being so friendly. Anyway the Homestead which was originally built in 1879 but as you will see how each room has been restored containing items which would have been relevant to this Homestead at the time. I found it amazing to see the photos of the restoration. It has an amazing feel to the house and each room is very uniquely designed. The grounds are relaxing lush with trees. I would highly recommend coming to visit this. I just wish I had bought the book my simple life in New Zealand that was there!
