About Barista

In 2009 ‘Barista-the Espresso Bar’ was due for a revamp when Steve Sayer and Gail Shirley took on the challenge of this juggernaut, renaming it simply ‘barista’ introducing a modern twist and Head Chef Shane Flanagan. Today a vibrant and eclectic mix of day and evening menus team with luscious sweet treats, or simple snacks, a full bar liquor licence or BYO wine, 27 fragrant teas and top service from Barista’s staff, reliably open 7 days a week till the theatres close their doors late at night.

The current owners shared their experience in art, theatre and music to raise the bar in dining experience. Gail occasionally hosts a 1950’s High Tea and on Saturday nights applies an ATCL in singing with ambient soft jazz and cafΓ© classics. Meanwhile Steve has used his design and art studies and just a fine brush to transform the soaring concrete walls which come alive with themes from the Library above.

Barista’s owners are passionate about their city and local ingredients are delivered fresh daily to present products with honesty and integrity from the bistro-style open kitchen. You can be assured there are no pre-mixes or additives or shortcuts, because at Barista you can see the chefs making our classic cakes, slices and cabinet treats, using wholesome, fresh ingredients every day.

George Street in Palmerston North is well known for its cafes and boutique shops and you will be warmly greeted by owner-operators throughout. There are no CEO’s here buying their third holiday home. Small businesses like ours survive on your feedback and so if you have a query or comment you can Facebook, email, phone or contact through the website. Thank you for helping a Mum or Dad put food on the table, a little girl get dancing lessons or a student pay for uni. This is us.

10:10 Perfect Cappuccino. Perfect temperature, texture and taste. Had extra large Cappuccino in a bowl - Awesome. If you enjoy great coffee - this is the best in Palmy - Highly Recommend.

I happened to be at Barista for a cuppa occasionally and every single time I have an exceptional service and delicious Afogatto no matter who is serving. Last time I got spoiled rotten as they had an out of this world quality Florentine. I know as I was selling them in a German deli. This Florentine tasted even better like a home made one. Keep it up, team. You are awesome.

As usual the food and service lived up to their fantastic reputation. Confitt duck and pork & sage meatballs , roasted potatoes were divine. The chef catered for special orders. The desserts were above and beyond. Amazing size portions. The lemon cake was divine, carrot cake and sticky date delicious as usual. The atmosphere and staff service made it a lovely evening.

This is a great spot with options to sit outside or inside. The staff is very hpful and the menu is varied and very tasty. I had the breakfast and it was a great start to a Sunday. This is a great place to socialize with friends and family or grab a nice bite by yourself. The staff are extremely competent, friendly and the food comes out quickly and is well prepared. Highly recommended if you are dowtown Palmy!

Lovely busy cafe on a Saturday am. Clear signs of Level 2 outside & inside as well as staff smiling to request all customers to register on their Covid19 app. Bright, Sharp & clear paintings around the cafe. Quick orders after browsing the brunch menu. Food served about 15min later. Succulent juicy beef cubes, browned white mushrooms, grill chicken breasts, black olives, crunchy bread sticks. Good coffee & ice blend mocha came with a scoop of ice cream. Good ambience despite the busy social distancing crowd. Ample paying street parking

Vegan breakfast must have been created and cooked by someone who doesn’t care about flavour and hasn’t bothered to even open a vegan recipe tab let alone a vegan cook book. Can’t believe I paid $24 for something I used to make (better) as a 19 yo new vegan in the 90’s. Disgusting, sloppy and bland. Even the mushrooms and spinach were over done on budget bread. Service team were lovely tho.

Just popped in for a quick lunch so ordered counter food. Chicken filo was delicious and lasagne was amazing, side of small fries was huge! Beautiful crispy fresh salad with each dish made it perfect, quick friendly service, terrific, thanks.
