★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Felt like a scene from Jurrassic park. Beautiful. Easy walk through ancient looking forest, lots of birds, only 20mins to the lookout point. Photos dont do this place justice.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is a lovely walking track which features sub-alpine forest, fantastic mountain views and the Bealey chasm.
You walk through mountain beech forest to the base of Mount Rolleston to admire the glacier. The track starts from a car-park 3 km north of Arthur's Pass Village on SH 73. The little green Jack's Hut, an historic road worker's hut, is just across the road.
About 200 metres turn left down a flight of stairs onto the Bealey Valley Track. The track is bridged across the Bealey River at "The Chasm". The track opens to a tussock clearing (alpine bog) and into the sub-alpine forest again before reaching the river again after about 20-30 minutes adjacent the avalanche warning sign. This is the "official" end of the track. Return the same way. At the most it would be a one hour walk.
You can walk further but I have only done this in the summer. There is a track that runs alongside the river, that allows you to get closer to the base of the mountain. However, under no circumstances whatsoever, should you attempt doing this in winter during the avalanche season.
Now I have to explain why because some crazy tourist will enevitably decide he wants to get up close and personal for a selfie at a glacier. 450 kg of ice fell down and killed him.
People think they can outrun an avalanche. An avalanche travels over 100-150 km an hour. You can't outrun an avalanche. The snow will then encapsulate you and it will be like cement. You will be entombed with no chance of digging yourself out and then only have 15 minutes to live before you run out of oxygen and suffocate. If that doesn't kill you, hypothermia will do the job next. There are other risks, land slips, rocks coming down etc. It is a big no- no to this in winter, during avalanche season.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ From the car park opposite Jacks Hut, the track follows a short section of the Arthur's Pass Walking Track before branching off to cross Bealey Chasm – a narrow channel where the river cascades over huge boulders.
Very easy walk. Not a steep track in sight. have to cross some stream but all good.
For stunning views of Mt Rolleston, continue on for a couple of minutes, climbing a hill to a snowgrass clearing. The track re-enters the beech forest and ends when you reach the Bealey River. This track is subject to avalanche hazard in winter past this point; please heed the warning signs.
