★ ★ ★ ★ ★ An interesting monument to see while spending time in Arthur's Pass is the Arthur Dudley Dobson Memorial which is situated alongside the West Coast Highway a few kilometres outside the village.
There is car park just east of the memorial for the Dobson Nature Walk. There is actually a pullover spot just west of the monument as well. You can walk through a impromptu path through some scrub right up to the monument.
What you find here is a simple, rectangular shaped stone stack. Near the base is the name Arthur Dobson Memorial as well as a plaque with a dedication to Dobson for efforts to explore the area and discover the pass linking the east and west coast of South Island through what is now Arthur's Pass.
Have a quick look at the memorial if you enjoy monument viewing during your travels. Then carry on with your drive through the pass or hikes in the area.
