I started from Tiki Trail at the bottom of the gondola. It was a good workout with nice views. I went when it was rainy and foggy, but fog cleared up mid afternoon. It has great views along the hike and at the peak.

Awesome day hike from Queenstown to the top of Ben Lomond. Following the ridge or the valley both paths are amazing, (probably the ridge line is more scenic). If you don't feel it to hike for 6-8 hours take the gondola up for $39 and start hiking from there, if you do so you won't need to hike the Tiki trail which is quite a steep hike by itself. Depending on your fitness it is about a 2.5- 4 hour hike to the top. Be aware of the cheeky Kea's which try to steal your lunch.

Tram opens at 9am, if you're not to the saddle by then, expect to share the trail. Otherwise, if you get out early, you'll get to enjoy the trail almost completely to yourself. Summit is farther than it seems as you ascend from the saddle. Nothing technical, but trail rarely flattens out.

Fantastic views from the top. Took the gondola up, so started at 800m (Ben Lomond top is at 1748m). Used 1.5 hours up to the saddle, and another hour up to the top. Beautiful 360 views. Met quite a bit of hikers, but not crowded. It was a hot day. Bring plenty of water, a cap and sun block, there is no shade. Trail itself is very facilitated, and not technical, although from the saddle and up, it is more rocky/steep. Sand can make it slippery on the way down. Well worth the effort.

Fantastic day hike. We took gondola so we could luge after..but it's probably worth taking up because the first bit looks steep. Did in winter, bit snowy at the top but path was safe. We didn't have ice picks or crampons. I'd wear hiking boots, very muddy at different spots. Fantastic views, I'm not going to spoil. Saddle is good but the summit is amazing

A very rewarding hike to the top, I started at One mile car park and hiked up One Mile Hiking track to meet up with the Ben Lomond track at 5 am. Currently the One Mile track is closed however if you are an experienced tramper with a good head lamp you can make it through safely before continuing up the very well looked after Ben Lomond track up to the saddle. From there to the summit the trail get steeper to an intermediate level of difficulty with small step, rock sections and shale rock. Once you summit it is very worth it, I was lucky enough to make it up on a clear day and meet some friendly local Kea parrots. I climbed up and down with a miniscus tear due to previous hikes and it took 7.5 hours with an extended stop at the summit. Worth it though as it was the last hike of my trip.

Hiked late December started just before first light 5am, from the bottom of Skyline Gondola. It was dark through the initial Forest so a light was necessary, I had intended to take the Tiki trail but missed the track and ended up going up mountain bike trials until I found the trail again after the mid clearing. Was touch going and track wasn’t as well defined and confusing with mountain bike tracks but eventually joined the track from the Gondola around 6am. From there reached the Ben Lomond saddle at 7.30am, found some goats along the way and started getting quite cold and windy, but views were stunning. After a steeper, rocky and more challenging climb up to the summit, reached it at 9am. Had the benefit of being the only person there for half an hour until a couple joined me. 360 views, had a clear day, was stunning, though was super windy. Had a snack and then descended, and started running into people who started after sunrise from base of the Gondola, and then larger groups from the Gondola. Descent I managed to find the tiki trial which was I found more difficult than the mountain trials I accidentally took. It was a narrow track and almost tripped a couple of times from rocks and tree roots. Reached the base of the Gondola at 11.30am, ready for lunch and enjoy the rest of Queenstown. All up took 6 hours for the hike, if you were to take the Gondola it would probably shave off an hour going up, half an hour going down. Recommend wearing layers as the weather changes quickly and exposed for most of the hike, and bring food. No facilities on the way, would have to divert to the Skyline Gondola. Overall a challenging and rewarding hike, would highly recommend. As an alternative do Queenstown Hill, with great views for a shorter hike. Though doesn’t compare to the experience of doing Ben Lomond

The track is easily a match for any of the Great Walks tracks in terms or view. Although the track is a few kilometers long only, one can enjoy spectacular surroundings throughout the entire walk. The connecting Tiki Trail is boring as it is completely covered by trees and there was no access from the One Mile track either, so I chose to start the track from the luge track right behind the Skyline Gondola. The track was indeed muddy, so it was quite annoying to descend, but the "alpine equipment such as ice axe and crampons" recommended by DOC is a bit exaggerated, even the snowy parts were easily walkable.
