About Bing Ceramics
Working from her home studio in Raglan, Bing celebrates colour and organic form.
“The Raglan lifestyle has long been centered around nature, beauty and freedom. Coastal conditions can be harsh, winters long and life edged with hardship, but there is intense beauty in the moods of nature here. My work is both inspired by and juxtaposed against this. Probably it’s arrogant, but I like to think of my work as a wee beacon to future archeologists, one which tells of the joy we found in our daily rituals; a little bright spot left behind in the oceans of plastic, a wee flag waving in the air telling of some who did appreciate craft, and riotous colour and the frugal hedonism of an ice-cream dripping down your hand on a hot day, or a warm weighty mug of tea under stormy skies.”
Ceramic sculpture takes time; you have to work on enlarging the piece as it dries, when it can stand it. Making tiles in between rises on a large work seems to be a perfect way to be present in the studio, working on something that can easily be abandoned at exactly the right moment. Plus it gives me an outlet for all those design podcasts I devour while I work!
You are invited to visit the studio during your next trip to the coast by appointment. (It’ll be a mess, you’ve been pre-warned).
